Parking
BY CHERE COPE
"The University should be pres
sured into doing something about
the parking problem," says Tim
McConnell, vice president of stu
dent government. "The student
senate supposedly has power over
traffic and parking-but it's really
no power at all when a parking bill
the senate has passed sits on Presi
dent Jones' desk for a month with
no explanation as to why it has or
has not been signed."
Last April, a bill designed to
reduce parking and traffic prob
lems on campus was passed by the
student senate. The bill called for
a parking lot in the coliseum desig
nated for commuting students, with
improved bus transportation to and
from campus.

we even got a letter explaining why
it hadn't been signed. Jones gave us
little or no explanation as to why
he had not acted on the bill," McCon
nell says.
Jones says the reason the bill has
not been passed is because the
buses were run practically empty
last year. "There were no takers.
But the bus has been rerouted to
put the Coliseum on the route. We'll
do what's possible," he added.
McConnell says that the reason
the buses weren't used is because
they were inefficient. "They
weren't running on proper
schedules. Because of the con
gested traffic, the buses were late,
and consequently students were
late to class."

answer
The senate parking bill was
passed mainly to encourage com
muter students to park at the col
iseum. "The problem is," says
George Key at security, "that the
majority of South Carolina's stu
dents live off campus and commute.
It can be understood where the
problems lie."
If the bus service could be
improved so that commuter stu
dents would use the coliseum park
ing facilities, much of the problem,
seemingly would be eliminated.
However, according to Key, the
shuttle service would be economi
cally unfeasible. "Assuming that
250 students were bused from the
coliseum to meet an 8:00 class, this
would require at least seven buses
with a 45-passenger capacity." It
would not be practical Jones adds.

Security has other plans to
alleviate the parking problem,
including an addition to the parking
garage and the utilization of tem
porary lots, until they are built up.
Also, Jones says, the administration
is looking into a protected and sec
ure bicycle rack at the coliseum for
commuters who could park their
cars and ride bikes to class. Long
range plans include a monorail sys
tem. "But this would not even be
in the development stage for at least
2-5 years," Key said.
"The administration is too con
cerned about long range plans,"
McConnell concludes, "The prob
lem is how to solve parking now.
We are concerned as to why the
administration hasn't acted. Are
they going to wait until someone
gets killed?"
