Why we quit
TO THE EDITOR
Since our resignations, we have
been asked by many students
exactly why we have publicly
"copped out" on student govern
ment. We don't feel that we need
to defend ourselves, however, we do
wish to detail some of our reasons
for quitting. The easiest way to
understand us is to look at what the
administration has done and what
SGA has not done.
1.) T. Eston Marchant, chairman
of the board of trestuees, has pub
licly endorsed and is co-chairman
of the S.C. committee for the elec
tion of one of the candidates for
President, while the president of
SGA cannot even endorse any can
didates.
2.) After the board of trustees
approved serving beer on campus,
no serious efforts were made to
carry through, even though when
additions were made to Carolina
stadium a lounge and bar was built
for the use of President Jones.
3.) While the meals served by Sla
ter can be called nothing short of
atrocious, the members of the com
mittee that checks on Slater get free
L meals, thus discouraging a fair
evaluation of the food.
sday 4.) Even though the administra
rsity tion has given all power over stu
dent parking to SGA, when a bill was
tems passed by the Student Senate last
i. C., spring to establish an effective on
year campus shuttle bus system, it was
stu- ignored by the administration.
3,and 5.) Even though the administra
8178 tion has apparently given athletics
itage first priority, we still have a fourth
rate football team.
Iver- 6.) Even though tuition costs rose
-sty- this year and will rise again, we find
se of administrators and faculty mem
:ock- bers have their sons and daughters
in the work-study program.
iaum Furthermore, the university offi
Gash cially sanctions "ripping off" stu
dents by allowing the Campus Shop
hus to charge us outrageous prices.
hruff 7.) The university plans without
as sufficient consultation with stu
dents to extend the undergraduate
irker library into the fraternity quad
rank rangle (one of the few remaining
green areas on campus) andl at the

8.) As evidence of its own impo
tence, Student Government has con
fessed that it cannot handle
priorities as the administration
would like, so it has returned that
task to the Registrar's office, which
refuses to give any priorities other
than to its own lackeys.
We would like to publicly state
that our resignations are not in
opposition to Student Government,
but rather in opposition to the
Administration's attitude towards
Student Government and the stu
dents in general. The current SGA
is attempting to bring about needed
change, but it has and will constan
tly be frustrated by the insensitive
Administration. Until drastic
changes are made in the university
administration, student needs will
go unheeded.

YAF vs. SCPIRG
TO THE EDITOR:
Well SCPIRG is back- and up to
its old tricks. The short relief
offered this summer was broken by
the sudden, and I think, false cry
of compromise.
SCPIRG compromise? No, fellow
students-let's look at this thing
offered by SCPIRG. A compromise
should be a two sided affair-yet
SCPIRG did not consult the student
body. Rather, under the cover of the
summer maneuvered with some
influential members of student gov
ernment. Turning their backs on the
ordinary student, SCPIRG
attempted to enlist the aid of only
those In power. Good politics-but
poor ethics, Some student govern
ment officials seem to be up to their
necks In SCPIRG-why? What has
SCPIRG offered our elected offi
cials?
Our own Mr. Spinazzolo seems to
be sure the SCPIRG would be able
to keep their house in order. But
Mr. Spinazzolo can not keep even
his house in order (that is, student
government). It is interesting to
note that the Oregon State Board of
Education has been unable to

acquire a reasonable accounting of
funds from OSPIRG. So much for
promises-and OSPIRG has been
around for almost two years.
In fact, in Oregon, because fees
are now collected under the guise
of "incidental fees", there is no
refund under any circumstances
for any student who objects to hav
ing his money used to promote
OSPIRG. So, those who feel safe
because there is, in theory, now a
refund procedure, had best rethink
their ideas. Besides no guarantee of
getting a full refund, being hassled
when attempting to get something
back (OSU Daily Barometer, Oct.
21, 1971), there is now the possibil
ity of SCPIRG being able to stop the
refund procedure completely.
And oh yes, just what can we look
forward to SCPIRG DOING? Well
in Oregon, OSPIRG was allowed by
the city of Beaverton (near no
Oregon campus) to research trans
portation patterns for wheelchairs
and other relevant vehicles.
OSPIRG also attempted to prove
that local record stores in Eugene,
Oregon were ripping students off.
The report was retracted by
OSPIRG (as being biased) the same
week it was published.
Yes friends, PIRG is a really won
derful thing-not to have on campus.
Think about this and then maybe the
Board's decision to table SCPIRG's
porposal will gain added signifi
cance.
