People of South Carolina feel he can't be trusted." "People are tired of the hypocrisy of the Nixon ad ministration. They're tired of war, of not getting a fair deal. People are beginning to question the justice of an administration in volved in an issue like Watergate." How will the people of South Carolina vote in November? The polls show President Nixon with a large percentage of the votes, but Bill Keyserling, state coordinator for McGovern-Shriver says, "There's no question about it. If the election was held today, the president would win. But we're picking up steam. McGovern could win. Every day we see more and more indications that people are coming around." Many unlikely supporters, such as Wallace people and Republicans have already come out for McGovern, Keyserling adds. "People don't want another four years of what they have been getting." Bill Melnyck, press secretary for the Committee to Re-elect the President thinks that this election holds a big Nixon victory, large enough to carry other Republican officials into office. "South Carolinians look at the positive things Nixon has done. The Atlanta couple recently returned and said they enjoyed "walking down city streets without fear of our lives," witnessing the "miracle of acuptncture" and hearing the Chinese people praise Americans. They will present a slide-show lecture Sept. 20, at 8 p.m. in room 107 Currell College. The event is be:ng presented by the University Union and is open to the public. Bill, an operating room technician, witnessed operations using acupuncture anesthesia and treatments for illness. "It definitely works," he said. "I would watch the patient when they would make the incision and there would be no change in facial ex pression. "The patient would be smiling and talking during the operation", Cozzens said. When the Chinese doctors demonstrated the technique on him he felt no pain. "You feel a little prick; but it doesn't hurt and doesn't draw blood or leave a mark." The Cozzens were only able to take the trip after a long process of letter writing, but finally they received a cable saying they were welcome to visit China. To raise money they put a second mortgage on their home, spent months studying the history and language of China, before they crossed the border at Hong Kong. "Crime in China's large cities is almost non-existent," Bill said. "We were amazed that in one of the largest cities in the world, Shanghai, we could walk down the streets and alleys late at night without fear of being molested. "Did you know that in Peking, a city of four million, they had only ern, Nixon RAY HAM, LEFT, AND JOI virtually ended the Vietnam war; his trips to Peking and Moscow have really established him as a peace candidate. We have not seen much from McGovern but promises." The issues that South Carolinians will be voting for involve mainly economics and defense. "Nixon has really helped the South in it's growth," Melnyck says. "South Carolina is in the fastest growing part of the country, due to Nixonomics. We're also in favor of the way he handled the foreign trade agreements-particularly Red China, acupuncture' two murders last year?" Cozzens said. He said that there are patrolmen on the streets but "they are unarmed and they don't have sticks or anything." Cozzens said he feels the reason China's crime rate is low is that "people feel responsible for themselves and each other." There is no "written body of law," and each case is considered differently and is dealt with differently. "Everywhere we went the Chinese people said the American people were a great people," Cozzens said. "They talk about foreign affairs all the time. They say Americans have made great achievements and the Chinese can learn a lot from the Americans." The couple stayed in hotels in the cities during their visit with the exception of two days in a guesthouse in Tachai, a model agricultural commune. At the commune, the couple visited with a number of families and found the Chinese people "always asking for criticism and wanted to know how they could improve." The idea of constant self-criticism and criticism of each other seemed important to students in high school, they said. "The students would have meetings to do what they called transforming through criticism of others and self-criticism," he said. Union sponsoring Georgia Tech trip The University Union is spon soring a trip to Georgia Tech to follow the Gamecocks on the road. The trip will cost $19 for students and $20 for non-students and in cludes the price of a ticket. Many South Carolinians are afraid that if McGovern gets elected, his planned defense cuts will virtually wipe out the Charleston,, largely a military town. "People are nervous about McGovern. His defense plans will destroy Charleston Air Force base, the military shipyards-it will { really play havoc with the economy of the city." Keyserling disagrees. "It just will not happen. The military bases will not close down. If some do as a result of the war's termination, McGovern would understand the need for conversion. He would train the people who worked on defense to work maybe for pollution, to clean up Carolina's parks and rivers." McGovern just holds a different set of priorities, the democratic co ordinator feels. { "in 1932 an incumbent Republican president said, "The only way to defeat Roosevelt is to excite a fear of what he would do in office.'
