Government departments combined The political science and in ternational studies departments of the University of South Carolina have been combined to form the new Department of Governmental and International Studies. The merger was prompted to maximize the resources of the two departments. Also cited as factors leading to the merger were broadened interests of students, in government and politics, dramatic trends in national and in ternational affairs and an in creasing importance of study of comparative politics, public ad ministration and local govern ment. The unified academic unit will provide for an improved approach to the study of government and politics at all levels, according to Professor James G. Holland Jr., acting head of the department. The four major academic programs offered in the new department-government and public administration, and in ternational studies and com parative politics-will be ad ministered by two chairmen, Dr. M. Glenn Abernathy and Dr. Donald E. Weatherbee, respec tively. The merger will not affect the degree programs and students currently enrolled will be able to continue their courses of study. According to university officials, the first change noticeable to students will probably be the reunumbering of courses next spring. Election filing date scheduled Final filing date for fall Senate elections is Wednesday. Open seats for the fall include one each for the Women's Quad, Columbia Hall, McBryde Quadrangle, off-campus sophomore, junior, senior and law student; two openings each for the Men's Towers and off-campus graduate students; and six openings for off-campus freshmen. Tony Daniels, head of the Elections Commission, explained that the requirements for being a senator entail being a full-time student with a GPR of at least 2.0, and living in the district they run from. "Also, no Senate member may serve on the executve or judicial branches of student government," Daniels said. Interested candidates may sign up from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at a desk in the first floor lobby of the Russell House Wednesday. There is a $1 filing fee.
