Joining Merritt in the Cav back field will be either veteran Greg Dickerhoof or junior college transfer Mike Lacika. The entire offensive line returns intact, with center Paul Ryczek a definite ACC and post season honors candidate. However, depth on the line is a problem. Junior Greg Godfrey is the lone backup man to have seen any action. Consequently, Lawrence is having to turn to sophomores and possibly freshmen to fill the gaps. Senior split end Dave Sullivan, UVa number two receiver a year ago with 32 receptions, will team with Mike McGugan to give Virginia strong receiving corps. Sullivan is being tabbed as a possible All-ACC performer. Virginia figures to increase its scoring punch this season, but for the Cavaliers to be more successful this year they must improve on a defense that yielded 272 points. Starting only one senior on defense, the Cavaliers will show a definite youthful flair. In veterans Stan Land and Billy Williams, however, Lawrence has the best pair of ends in the conference. Leroy Still and Dick Ambrose will man tackle positions. All three linebackers will return, although there are no standouts among them. The secondary has all-star candidates Gerard Mullens and Steve Sroba starting. Two year letterman Chris Brown will fill a safety spot and soph Chris Turner gets the nod at cornerback. Virginia is considerably short of backup help, and injuries to key starters would be disastrous, but overall the Cavaliers outiook appears brighter than in recent years.
