Kerr said after school was out this spring he hitchiked out to Los Angeles, "the dating capitol of the world" as the Dating Game says. "I just called for a kick, I never really thought I'd get on," Kerr said. H. filled in a little card and then the show called him in for the first interview. "The first in terview was like the game. If they liked you, they called you in for the second interview in front of the producer and the director." If you got past the second interview, Kerr said, you were called for a date to do the show. When he got to the studio to the show, Kerr said, "There were 18 guys sitting in a room" to be briefed about the show. They were told, no politics, no plugs and to keep the conversation moving. "The most important word for the guys was "because." If you said something or got stuck, use because. While he waited for his turn to go on, Kerr said he watched other contestants on the show via closed circuit television. "I was a little tense, but I wasn't scared," Kerr said. He said that the audience was small and that the atmosphere of the program was "fairly personal." He also said that there had been so many in terviews that it seemed like a fairly natural and not really ex traordinary thing to do. "I sat there with No. 3, we became kind of friends and we talked and kidded around during the commercials. You know, 'look at that chick in the front row,' that type of thing," Kerr said. "The chick was beautiful. She was one of the supporting players on Ken Berry's "WOW" this summer," he said. "The prize was something like a trip to Arizona," he said. "I dug the hell out of it.
