Stadium has
new facilities

A vastly modernized Carolina Stadium will officially be
renamed Williams-Brice Stadium at a dedication
ceremony during half-time of the USC-Virginia football
game Saturday night.
The stadium is being renamed as a memorial to the late
Mrs. Martha Williams Brice, whose multi-million dollar
inheritance included a large bequest for the improvement
of the 38-year-old stadium.
Originally with a capacity of 25,000, a new upper deck on
the West side brought the capacity of the stadium to 56,140
for last season.
In addition to the second tier, a new lighting system, an
Astro-turf playing field, a new press box, broadcast booths
and camera deck were installed before the '71 campaign.
Since last year the lower stands on the West side were
replaced with a concrete deck and the rest of the lower
stands with aluminum seats. The more spacious seats cut
i- the capacity to 53,685. A 47-yard Astro-turf practice field
d under the upper deck on the west side was installed for use
6 by the baseball and track teams, as well as the football
team, when inclement weather interrupts outdoor prac
tices.
