Gamecocks were hampered by injuries and inconsistancy.
One national sports magazine described the offense as
being anywhere from mediocre to atrocious. But all that is
going to change. Bill Troup says so.
"I like the responsibility. It's a big challenge to me. If I
can do it...I mean, if I can fill the bill, the team will be
better. This team and the coaches know their direction,
and that's to win. That's our one goal."
Saturday's game will mark the first time Troup has
started, or even played in for that matter, a regular-season
game for USC. The past year has been spent as a red shirt,
learning the Carolina offense and playing on the Hunk
team, a team of redshirt performers who aid the varsity in
their preparation. To some, working with the Hunks after
being a prep and college star might be an insult. But not to
Troup.
"All through my life, I've mostly been on the first team,
the team that plays. Working with the Hunks gave me
insight into the other side.
However, there was still the question of Troup's ability
to quickly grasp that USC offense. He did. Though ham
pered by a minor injury, he completed 14-30 passes in the
spring game for 139 yards. But above all, he established
himself as the No. 1 quarterback.
"I made some mistakes in that first game," he recalled.
"I was sorta green at the system. To be a really good
quarterback, you must know the system like the coach
does. I don't know it that well yet, but I feel secure. I still
have room for improvement, but I feel confident I can play
now and get the job done."
Any thoughts about facing Virginia in his first game in a
Carolina uniform? "Most of the guys at Virginia un
derstood. Sure, there were a few who felt that I left them
out in the cold. I know all of them will be gunning for South
Carolina. ..and Bill Troup."
He then cracked a wide grin. "But I wouldn't Want it any
other way." The smile of confidence? Obviously. But of
even greater importance, the smile of a winner.

said USC center Danny Traylor
about the pressures of the United
States Olympic basketball tryout
camp earlier this summer.
"There was no emotional outlet
whatsoever out there, and
everybody needs to let out their
emotions a little bit," continued
Traylor. "We had no nights out at
all end we got to see one movie the
whole time we were there and I felt
like I'd go climbing up the wall at
that.
"I guess if I went again I'd gc
better equipped. We all knew it
would be a rough and fast tryout
and I'm sure everyone went there
physically equipped, but we
weren't ready for it mentally. The
emotional pressure of doing
nothing at all but play basketball
was great," said Traylor.
The seven-foot senior continued,
"We stayed at the Air Force
Academy and that's no hot bed of
liberalism. It was like prep school
and I'm not used to that kind of
living."
Traylor discussed the busy
schedule of events that began
every morning at 6:45. "After we
woke up, we ate breakfast, waited
one hour and played ball for two,
before eating lunch. After lunch we

after it we played games in the
evening."
The schedule left no time for
activities other than eating and
playing basketball and Traylor, as
did other players, especially
UCLA's Swen Nater, complained
about the lack of time between the
two. "I feel like you need two hours
to digest your food, especially
when you eat alot. It wasn't as bad
there as when we went to Hawaii
and played games right after
eating." Nater later dropped off
the Olympic squad citing the food
situation as his reason.

to go through something like that,"
said Traylor. "Not one guy out
there would like to do that kind of
stuff all summer long, but I guess if
they go on to win a gold medal
they'll all feel it was worth it."
Unlike many of the Olympic
hopefuls Traylor aimed little or no
criticism toward Coach Iba. "I
never saw him much, he was
always standing in the background
watching the action like a general.
He set the guidelines and lectured
the first few days, but after that we
broke down into seven different
teams and our own coaches ran the
action."
