x f Jones'greeting On behalf of the University of South Carolina, I want to welcome all of you to the campus for the fall term. To those of you just beginning your academic career I extend a special welcome. As your days here extend into weeks and months, I hope and believe you will discover the University is so structured as to give you ample oppor tunity to develop your personality and your career preference with considerable " *1 freedom. g New students and those of you returning to continue your education with us will find, I believe, ample evidence the University is growing physically and academically. Changes have been made during the summer months to strengthen the academic administration. Construction of new facilities on campus is moving along rapidly in some cases, and with unavoidable delays in 1 others. But we are thankful to have new facilities assured. Regardless of the physical or administrative changes, your University i depends in great part on your dedication to learning and on your interest in University affairs if it is to develop a more mea ingful response tp the human needs of our state and nation. This issue is esigned to explain a few of the parts -- to orient freshmen, ransfers, or anyone who hasn't been here this summer to he issues surrounding the campus. Hopefully, this issue will enhance the orientation rograms conducted all summer and fall and will allow ou to take a closer look at the University's interworkings, roblems and goals. And in this issue the Gamecock staff has made an at empt to capture the spirit of the place. Maybe we have een able to explain in part why people come here to study and why they stay. The Gamecock is funded by student activity fees and is esigned for the free exchange of ideas. This fall the amecock will be published twice weekly -- Mondays and hursdays -- and will be headed by Charlie Fellenbaum. Students interested in working on the Gamecock should pply to room 318 of the Russell House. Everyone is elcome. This issue, the largest in the history of The Gamecock, as produced by the summer staff of the Gamecock -- lice Potter, managing editor; Brooks Rogers, ad ertising manager; Ben Baggott, chief photographer and cot i Derks, editor-in-chief. * DOWNTOWN * R ERR S WIDE, WIDE PALAZZO PA SPREAD THEIR FASHION The big fashion news in super wide fl that start to flare from the thigh a around the hips .. .an important lo< fall!
