By Wagner Halselle Roberts Emperor of North America Is there no end to my tirades!? They echo the length and breadth of Versailles and only fuel my anger even more towards the vampires that feed on the minds and bodies of my people and who cause their ever mounting suffering and anxiety. Even the printer remains unaffected as his disease warps the medium through which I try to convey my messages--the lens is foreshor tened beyond recognition as my fourteen page masterpiece on Milatria was hacked to pieces on the bed of last minute editing and horren dous proofreading. What I write to you, my children, and what is printed are often at odds with each other--it even taxes my un derstanding. So is my credulity often stretched--like some tired brassiere, done repenting--when Corpula shifts from one foot to the other and whines that he only pollutes .001 of one percent of mercury into the ocean's water and claims in the same breath how wonderful he is for polluting so little. Even a child of six months knows, after the Enlightenment, that this tiny amount upsets the intricate balance of systems in such a manner that where the oceans could handle all the mercury pollution that occurs naturally, this small amount added by industry tips the scale over into the disaster side. Whether the added weight on the scale had been a brick or a feather the results are the same--poisoned seafood that will cause us brain damage. This, of course, is but one of hundreds of examples across the nation in man's national and international effort at suicide. He thinks if he can make money off it everything will We Have Then For Y( See Us 2,000 for A1ELL BO'I AVY BELL BOTTOMS IN July Sale stripes - Corduroy - All C Prices -i H-IP HUGGE PEA-NUTS BEL IWHTEI ALL COLORS AI * ARMFATIGUE TIROSERS . *AMKAKITROSERS ... 1*. S. may not be the only guilty ones of blatant pollution but we are by far the leaders of it, as we are in most other things. We consume and produce 90 percent of the world's energy. We glut ourselves upon the en vironment at such a rate that, while we look down our noses at the Indians for being horribly overpopulated, one American child is ten times more burdensome on the environment than his Indian counterpart, or most any other foreign counterpart. This, of course, must stop... now. And it will, by one of three events -- the wrath of a vengeful Mother Nature, in which case the matter will be settled rather definitely; the unlikely awakening of the slumbering wisdom of those in power, including the all-powerful corporations; or armed revolution if all else fails and by the time the wee folk realize what's being done to them and decide to act, it will probably be too late anyway. Therefore, it would seem our survival would rest upon the slumbering wisdom of the vampire Corpula. The outlook for that event is... how do you say in Engliss?...ah yes, bleak. Why? There are many reasons--the prevailing illogic of short term profit for long term loss, the dominance of consumerism and built in obsolescence vs. durability, quality, con servation through the recycling method based on Mother Nature's time tested plan; the continued inability of those in power who claim to be our leaders to see more than one generation ahead at a time. Rembert Dennis, who cannot see beyond the ends of his shoes into the future, who thinks even now, by pushing the South Carolina tidelands out of the ownership of the state and into private hands, he will be doing the public a great service. He cannot see the danger from land developers and real estate men 20 years from now. He cannot see the danger from land developers and real estate men 20 years from now. He cannot see his heirs ever falling on hard times and selling acre after acre to suburban developers of the East Coast's last remaining unpolluted, major tidelands. He and his other moneyed, landholding friends think of themselves as sportsmen who would defend and maintain the tidelands area from this destruction much better than the state--who owns the other 60 percent of the tidelands. He and his other plantation-sportsman friends may be right. South Carolina's present mood after so many years of grinding poverty, is to lust after heavy industry and the Devil take care of her natural treasures and heritage. She does not realize, after being bitten, that she will never regain her lost greatness in this manner but will only be raped and her agricultural and coastal fecundity lost forever. The world will always need pine and beech, peaches, pecans, rice, indigo, corn, cotton, tea and any of the hundreds of products that can be grown here as well as the oysters, crabs, flounders, clams, and shrimp that grow in South Carolina's coastal bays, sloughs, inlets, sounds, salt marshes and lagoons of her un PONDER11SA Student Night TUESDAY 5 P.M.
