The Baruch Institute.
A very stuffy-sounding name for ecological
research.
Research, mind you, that notenly involves a
microscope or two, but a practical lesson in
learning the ways of the ocean, understanding
the tides and creatures that call the water
home. It's learning to keep a small boat afloat
in high wind, or straining to pull in a net full of
mollusks and occasionally a sunburn.
All this just to gather research for one of the
many Baruch rese.arch projects.

They said they thought there was too little
activity in ecological marine research. "It was
a challenge to come here. There has been little
research activity in this particular area. That,
coupled with a yet unspoiled estuarine system
to be studied at the coastal facility, and the
opportunity to develop an educational program
in conjunction with estuarine and marshland
programs," the institute's director said.
USC almost did not have the Institute. Over
three years ago Clemson was originally slated
to receive the facility and had even received a

Baruch Foundation with a proposal to study the
marine environment nonetheless. Through
some bungling by Clemson and some good
timing on the part of USC officials the Institute
was set up in Columbia.
The famed Hobcaw Barony, a 17,500 acre
plantation outside Georgetown where the In
stitute's field station lies, represents one of the
few unpolluted estuaries remaining on the East
coast.
Financier, millionaire Bernard Baruch
bought the land in his home state in the 1900's
and turned it over to his eldest daughter Belle.
It was Belle who recognized the suitability of
Hobcaw for conservation education and formed
the Belle W. Baruch Foundation to facilitate
that end.
With 30 faculty members involved in
research, the Baruch Institute is attemptinq to
fully analyze the estuarine system. A definite
attempt is being made to find the common
ground necessary to translate the findings into
terms--such as food energy levels and dollar
values -- that the public and its lawmakers can
understand. The economic system and the
ecosystem, for instance, are not dissimilar
conceptually; according to Dr. Vernberg.
The Institute is combining economists with
biologists, lawyers with geologists, engineers
with political scientists, chemists and
physicists. The staff is involved in studying
some of the environmental problems in the
state, such as pollution in Charleston Harbor.
