Increased federal funding will permit
USC's College Work-Study Program to
accomodate more students this fall than In
past semesters, according to Robert B.
Jeter, the university's director of student
aid.
The work-study program, which is
providing approximately 1,000 USC
students with part-time employment,
obtains 80 per cent of its funds from the
federal government.
Although the increased monies should
provide more jobs, Jeter said that very
few job applicants have been turned down
in past years if they were actually in need
of financial assistance.
The program is geared toward students
who have a distinct financial need. Ac

cording to Jeter, only those in need are
accepted into the program.
"Participants in the program have to be
from needy families,"' he said. "Either the
student or the parents must submit a
confidential financial statement before the
application is considered. We turn down
only people who don't qualify financially."
Participants in the program work an
average of 15 hours per week during terms
in which they are taking university
courses for credit. They may work 40
hours per week in the summer.
The program is of particular financial
aid to the university, since such a high
percentage of funding is provided by
federal sources. The government funds
pay 80 per cent of the student's salary,
while the university department em
ploying the student provides the remaining
20 per cent.

According to Jeter, his office attempts to
place applicants in jobs related to their
studies. These efforts are not always
successful, however, since university
departments have relatively low allot
ments of work-study personnel.
The student aid office also has some
contracts with downtown Columbia
businesses, although a large majority of
the program's participants work in USC
departments.
A work-study provision apparently not
understood by many, according to Jeter, is
the requirement that those employed by
the program resubmit their applications
each year.
"This is not necessarily a continuing
thing," Jeter said. "The student must
qualify each year. And once a student
works up to his need, he is off the
program.'
