Slowly, sleep: counselors and the wide-awak kids filter in to wait on the ride out to Bell Camp, USC's camping facility off Percival Road. One mother brings her two kids in tow. instructing a counselor, "Now if you hear any fighting from these two again . .." "Hey, hey. wanta see a dead beetle"" her youngest yells at a pig-tailed girl. "No, thank you," the girl an swers politely and turns away. The bus ride to the camp can be as much fun as the day's activities. Cheers of "Jay loves Cooter, Jay loves Cooter" or "Susan loves Tommy" fill the bus. Now in the second week of the first session. the kids are preparing for Indian Day and Parents' Day while creating turtle-shaped cushions. The first of five two-week sessions began June 5 for children of students or USC faculty and staff. The cost is $15 per child. and includes round-trip transportation from the Russell House and light refreshments. About 15 scholarships per session are given to children who would be unable to go otherwise. The day camp is staffed by paid volunteer USC graduate and un dergraduate students under the direction of David Ness, Univer sity Union director; Robert Alexander, dean of student ac tivities: and graduate assistants Hank Pierson and Johnston Dantzler. For some kids swimming lessons are the first order of the day. The symposium is sponsored by the University's Bureau of Governmental Research and will cover a variety of topics of current concern to local government of ficials. "Our target is the elected or appointed official of local govern ment," said Dr. James E. Larson, director of the USC bureau.
