Two comments were made in the
column. "The Gutenberg Ex
periment," in April and May in
ferring that Athletic Director Paul
Dietzel travelled to Denver last
December using University funds.
Usage of those funds for such
purposes would be illegal. The
comments and inferences made by
me in print were incorrect. Two
one-way tickets to Denver and two
one-way tickets from Denver to
Columbia were paid for by the
Denver Broncos.
I have seen the official receipt
dated January 25 received by the
athletic department from the
Denver Broncos.
Therefore, I apologize to coach
Dietzel for the statements im
plying that he was engaged in
dishonest practices in this affair. I
also declare that these statements
are incorrect, and retract them
accordingly.

Black insult
This letter is a reply to Lt.
Johnston in the May 1 issue of the
Gamecock. So all races had
Confederate sympathisers, eh?
Certainly not mine. If I remember
correctly, the Confederates fought
to keep my people under their
"peculiar institution" (tyranny) of
slavery in the flimsy guise of
"states rights."
Your glorification of the enemy
(they are not traitors, they never
were on the side of Blacks) makes
me sick to my soul, and your ef
forts to keep alive this disease is
nothing short of madness. Even
your neo-military title is a sign
that you don't regret what your
ancestors did to us one bit, and that
you would do it again if you got the
chance.
I wish that you would stop
perpetuating this insult to Blacks
everywhere, and bury the Con
federacy once and for all. My
colors are for freedom. What are
yours for?

The University has been fighting a paper war
with the city of Columbia for the past ten years
over the closing of Green Street. In the last
three years the students themselves have taken
up the fight, culminating this spring In a small
demonstration against Harold Brunton and the
S. C. Highway Department.
The 40-50 students who carried signs reading
"Pickens Street Will Swallow Our Campus"
and "Hal Brunton Is On A Heavy Concrete
Trip" into a highway department hearing were
not convinced that a plan to widen Pickens had
been studied substantially. Many realized that
the proposed widening would not only increase
traffic around the University, but would deal a
death blow to any hopes of closing Green Street.
Soon after a somewhat chaotic hearing
Brunton mailed the Highway Department a
letter requesting that any construction on
Pickens be postponed until further study.
The original plans call for Pickens to be
widened to four lanes and depressed between
Pendleton and Green Streets. This would cut
about 50 feet from the north end of the lawn in
front of Humanities and 35 feet from the south
end. A 40-foot pedestrian overpass would be
erected over the street and come to rest in the

to traffic.
The widening of Pickens Street was
originally proposed by students in 1967, as
Brunton will happily tell you. Capstone had just
been opened and 1,900 students felt something
should be done about pedestrian, traffic con
flicts on Pickens. Five years ago Pickens
wasn't an intregral part of the campus. The
Humanities Building had not been built, the
business school and Columbia Hall were barely
in the planning stages.
Student traffic on the cross walk has swollen
and during peak periods 675 students cross
Pickens in 15 minutes, virtually closing the
street.
