Forrest Broom, USC's talented
weightman, had a busy week-end
of track Friday and Saturday.
On Friday the senior from
Charleston was in Philadelphia
representing Carolina in the Penn
Relays' discus competition. The 6
5, 225 pounder finished fifth with a
toss of 161 feet.
Broom unleashed a toss of 185
that landed out-of-bounds. Had it
landed inside the boundary, he
would have had the best toss of the
afternoon. W
Saturday night Broom was back
in Columbia to help USC smash
Georgia to retain their dual meet
winning streak. Broom won the
discus and was second in the shot Gamecock Pete Carpeni

Public School Singles Champion of
New York City, and reached the
fourth round of the prestigious
Orange Bowl Tournament. In
addition the Gamecocks will lose
only one player, Art Kamm, via
graduation.
"Jeff has the potential to become
a first class college player. He
could develop into a real star here
at Carolina. Right now he could
probably play number four or five
singles for us. He will definately
help us next year," said Smarr.
Smarr also stated that he is after
one or two more players and is
very close to signing one.
While the Gamecocks should
continue to improve in the up
coming years, so will the op
position. Already added for the
next campaign are Wake Forest,
Tennessee and North Carolina
while the netters will continue to
face Georgia and Florida State.
