Look at the
other side
DEAR MS. MILLER:
My letter concerns two articles
printed in the April 19th issue of the
Gamecock. They both concern
getting the facts straight. My first
bitch is about that God-awful pict
ure entitled "I'm Min Li. Bomb
Me." I don't know where you dug
up that picture but maybe you
should check your source. You just
might find out that the subjects
were victims of the Viet Cong's
indescriminate shelling of civili
ans. What, pray tell, do you call
that? Accidental? Hardly. It seems
that you, among others, would
have us, the public, believe that we
are the only ones that ever killed
anyone or anything in Vietnam.
Really now.
What about the other side? A
little "equal time" maybe? What
do you think happens every time
the Viet Cong or NVA shell a
village or city? It's not just a bunch
of empty huts or vacant lots that
become impact areas, it's
PEOPLE. Good ole' flesh and
blood ones just like in your picture.
Who do you think fills the hospital
wards over there besides
Americans? Right again, people
just like in your picture only vic
tims of someone else's bombing.
And in case someone wishes to
point out our atrocities, please,
before you do, look through the
relatively unpublicized tons of
theirs. You'll find it's far worse
and far more prevalent, if you can
read it without being sick. But
enough on this and on to my next
bitch.
You, Mr. Phil Sharpe, are also
guilty of murder. Possibly even to -
countless numbers. Not to be
trivial, BUT apparently you not
only failed to read past the head
lines in the newspaper you took
your information from, you also
apparently butchered what you did
read. It said 100 bombers but only

20 B-52's. Granted, that is picky,
not where does it end?Certainly not
in your letter. You are right on one
account though. Those 598,110
people are not military targets. So
where did you get that they were?
Where, I ask you, did it say we
bombed 598,110 nonmilitary
targets? Just because the paper
said we bombed the Haiphong area
how can you say the Air Force
passed up all those military
targets just to bomb 598,110 non
military targets? Again, please get
your facts straight; it adds to your
credibility. Last of all I wish to
make one final statement. I too
abhor killing and I too would like to
see peace in our time, so would
most other people. Mr. Sharpe,
your propaganda is bullshit. Look
at the other side; we're not the only
ones killing "innocent" people.
BILL McFARLAND
Chairman chosen
against wishes
DEAR MS. MILLER:
In regards to the letter,
"Goodbye Union," I feel there are
a few more facts to be brought out.
I am referring to the Arts Com
mittee after Mr. Barney Oliver's
election, nominations were taken
for the position of Arts Committee
Chairman and only two people
were nominated - Warren Chick
and Andy Zalkin - by the Com
mittee. But when the results of the
appointments were announced a
dark horse - Susan Boggie -- had
received the chairmanship. The
thing which puzzles me is how the
officers can go against the direct
stated wishes of a committee,
because, after all, the committee
members are the ones who have to
work with the chairman.
Also Miss Boggie's credential s
are somewhat questionable. She
was appointed vice-chairman of
the committee, but was absent at a
majority of the meetings. Also on
the event - The Fantastics - which
she was chairman, she showed up
%/ hour before the performance to
take her bows which she didn't de
serve. The people who work on the
event were committee members,
not the chairman; She was not
there until a few minutes before
the performance.
I just hope that after all the
committees' work of this year was
not wasted. If the committee fails,

On discussing
menstrualcramps
DEAR MS. MILLER:
The spark of demonstrations by
members of "Viet Vets Against the
War" has been well reported by
your associates in the Gamecock.
However, only part of their story
has been told and your readers
may be interested in learning a bit
more about them.
The group, inhabiting the ZOO,
better known as the Lee Street
Bunch have boondoggled the public
by their signs. As Weyman Dod
son adroitly phrased them in his
letter, the group is "no better
qualified to pass judgment on the
horrors of war than they would to
discuss menstrual cramps.''
Perhaps next time they demon
strate they'll add truism to their
placards.
The group concerned are more
likely semi-professional agitators -
who seek pleasure and get their
kicks at seeing the public grinding
their teeth, clenching their fists,
and becoming violently aroused by
the verbal defecation spurting
from their oral grottos. This same
bunch are well renowned for their
draft dodging counciling services
to the community, and their
growing success at enticing men to
desert from the armed services.
The individual, Peter Brown,
whose letter of the 19th called you a
"complete idiot" and condemned
the Gamecock for not rallying for
his "progressive movement" has
published, organized and demon
strated on our campus - but he rea
lly isn't one of us. By last word, he
was holding a substitute teacher's
position in the city when he wasn't
too busy trying to promote a cause
which he doesn't actually believe
in.
What type of individual is the
person, who openly condemns
killing of Vietnamese as a sin
against humanity, and then secr
etively chants "down with the
pigs'".anorganization against crime
and violence. His actions can not
be anything but deceitful, and his
goals nothing more than disrupting
the workings of our campus,
government, and the creation of
his own army of fellowmen and
journeymen to do his dirty work.
Demagogues have forced them
selves and their "causes" on
people since the beginning of time.
Sadly enough, many revolutions
are the result of aimless people
wanting to claim membership in a
group or movement created under
the disguise of eliminating the
sicknesses of society. Their quest
to right the wrongs of one
generation usually ends in in
flicting their own injustices and
sicknesses on the next.

More on the
Crucible story f;
DEAR MS. MILLER: tt
Shellie Newell's letter con
cerning "The Crucible's" budget C
cut by the Board of Allocations told n
only half the story. An examination I,
of the members of this committee - tl
will reveal that none of them has 14
any interest in a campus literary t(
magazine, and only David Lewis k
has any practical knowledge about ti
one (and his magazine, "Common e:
Sense," can scarcely be called ai
literary). Mr. Lewis, who has t3
shown his hatred and scorn for el
"The Crucible (Crudible)" from c(
the beginning, was the committee
member who suggested that
literary magazines were "on the
decline." Surely, he could have no
reason to want to inc;ease the
allocation' to a magazine whose
first issue was so very obviously
superior to any issue of his own?
By forcing the staff to work with
only 6000 for the whole of next le
year, the allocations committee
seems to be trying to effect the S
second demise of "The Crucible." W
The university and its students
deserve the recognition that this
publication has brought it by prov- A
iding a medium for its outstand
ing writers. Such artists as Thom
Bigham, Terry Parke, Dennis m
Adams, and Wagner Roberts
certainly merit the outlet that the 0
first issue of "The Crucible" pro
vided them. Perhaps the Board of
Allocations has forgotten that this
issue was produced on a shoestring c
budget by a staff that received no
financial remuneration?
Surely the board cannot argue fri
that "The Crucible" has not pro- fe
ven itself; at the South Carolina m
Collegiate Press Association Con
vention in Charleston on April 1, w
'The Crucible' received three first
place awards, one third place, and
the award for the best overall M
literary magazine in its category,
a fact that was semi-ignored by the
Gamecock and, apparently the
Board of Allocations. In addition to
this, the judges (all from out of the
state (must one be from out of
state to have literary taste?) asked
for their own personal copies of the
magazine. The editor of "The
Anthology," the Winthrop College
literary magazine, has written to
Ms. Domroe requesting her
assistance in preparing a revival
issue of that publication.
So, with Ms. Newell, I beg the
Board of Allocations to come to its
senses, recognize the true value of
"The Crucible" and increase its
budget accordingly.

TI'm Susie,
murder me'
DEAR MS. MILLER:
I have just read your April 19
issue with interest. The picture of
the pathetic Vietnamese victim of
war was very poignant, and a valid
argument against continued
bombing.
It would have been more
authentic, however, if it were not
opposite an editorial plea to
legalize abortions. Why not a
picture of another baby, with the
caption, "I'm Susie Smith, Murder
Me" ('Because I am inconvenient,
expensive, and perhaps em
barrassing."

System caused
concert failure
DEAR MS. MlI.IR:
Concerning the review of the
aye Tucker concert, here are a
!w facts to keep the record clear.
he reason for the poor quality of
te sound system was that Andy
farquez, president of Phillip
onstellation Enterprises, made
o attempt to get a good system.
istead he pair a member of one of
ie local bands of Columbia $5 to
,t him use his bands' system and
i operate it. Since he probably
new nothing about doing sound,
ie result was a bad concert. If this
cample of skimping on quality is
ri indication of Mr. Marquez's
rpical effort, perhaps someone
se should be running campus
)ncerts.

EAR MS. MILLER:
I am writing in response to the
tter carried in the April 19th
sue of The Gamecock which was
ritten by Weyman Dodson. I have
ad (as everyone else has) of both
e war itself and the dem
istrations it has precipitated.
rter considering both sides of the
gument at hand, I can only say -
at my sympathies lie not so
uch with those at home who
>pose the war, but with those who
ust fight it.
This is not to say that I condone
e war in any way, I do not think
at anyone in their sound mind
iuld. War in itself is an atrocity
yond belief. But the Vietnam
ir has stimulated no emotions

ir and anziety that I carried with

siting for someone I loved to just
