When Carolina's track team won the South
Carolina intercollegiate Track Championship
yes erday, it was the biggest team victory for
USC since 1ill McClure came to Columbia from
Abilene Christian.
"We did as well as we expected to do," Mc
Clure said after the meet was over. "In fact, we
had more pluses in our performances than
minuese."
Pre-meet predictions had the Gamecocks in
he favorite spot, but most observers figured
Bap Isi College to breath hard down USC's
back.
As ii turned out, USC broke the meet open
midway ihrough the competition and were
never pushed thereafter. USC had 125 points in
he meei, exactly 30 more than Baptist was able
o score. Furman, The Citadel and South
Carolina State finished way behind, and Allen
never did get on the scoreboard.
Mil.on Reid of USC was selected as the
ou s anding perform'r in the meet. The
Virginia native won both the 100 and 220, and
ran on USC's two winning relays, the 440 and
mile.
"He did a great job," McClure said of his
freshman sprinter. "He ran a great leg on the
mile relay, and he ran just fast enough for us to
win he 440 relay."
Reid has sliced two-tenths of a second off his
bes 100 ime in high school, and his coach says,
"He has come a long way this year. He is in
be er shape now and he has really come down
a lo .
"He is going to stay a sprinter until his junior
year," McClure continued, "and then we are
going to change his specialty to the quarter. I
hink he can become a world class quarter
miler, although I also think he can be among 1

When asked how much he thought Reid could
improve in the 100, the assistant Olympic coach se
replied, "I don't want to put a limit on him, but Bi
I am sure he will eventually run 9.3, and will be
a consistent 9.4 sprinter."
Bu., Reid did not win the meet single
handidly. The Gamecocks got a number of
poin s from people they were not counting on to
o do as well as they did.
Jumper Ron Rader was one of the USC
performers that scored better than expected.
The senior won the triple jump at 47-4/2 and
was second In the long jump with a leap of 22-9.
"We got bonuses in the jumps," McClure
remarked. "We weren't counting on them, but
hey jusi came in and did a good job."
In he ihree-mile, USC got another surprising
win. Jack Miller, who ran his best two-mile I
ever against North Carolina on Saturday, came
back wiih another impressive performance by
winning the race in 14:36.8.
Miller had to sprint past Baptist's Ken Layne,
who was favored to win the race, in the last 100
yards io win. After sticking close for the first 11
laps, Layne jumped off to a ten yard advantage
:>n he final backstretch, only to lose it on
Miller's final spurt. ste
"Miller was another guy who gave us more 9:)
