USC, who won two dual meets
last week, will host the 1972 South
Carolina Intercollegiate Track
Championships, today on the
Weems Baskin Track. The six
team meet will begin at 7 P.M.
In addition to Carolina, defen
ding champion Baptist College,
Furman, The Citadel, South
Carolina State and Allen will
compete in the meet. Clemson was
also entered in the meet, but pulled
out yesterday.
Eleven individual defending
champions are entered in the
meet, including USC's Forrest
Broom, who won both the shot put
and discus last year.
Broom will be joined by Rich
Sorin and Buck Thompson in both
the shot and discus, while Mel Witt
will be in the shot. Broom's bests
are 52-214 and 173, while Sorin's
tops are 52 and 157.
In the javelin and the pole vault
Gamecock performers have the
top marks entered. Tom Chapman
has thrown the javelin 209 feet this
year and Bill Bryan holds the
school pole vault record at 15-314.
Brian Hyder vaulted 15-1 in the
indoor season and he, Dave McKee
and Russell Jeffcoat will also vault
for USC in the meet. Mike Cawley.

counted on to place in the javelin.
He threw 195 earlier in the year.
Baptist's Jim Burgess, the
defending triple jump champion. is
the favorite again this year. Ron
Rader, also entered in the long
jump, and Bruce Stuart, also
entered in the high jump, carry the
USC hopes in the triple.
Bob Wolfe will join Stuart in the
high jump, and Guy Hornsby is
slated to long jump.
USC has the top times entered in
seven-- the 440 and mile relay, 100,
220. intermediate hurdles, half
mile and mile-- of the meet's 11
running events.
Milton Reid and Jim Small both
have run 9.6 in the 100. and will try
to unseat Baptist's Bill Barrett as

Although he has the top time of
the entries. Wayne Thomas will
face stiff competition from Fur
man's Paul Barker and Baptist's
Ken Layne in the mile. Thomas'
best time is 4:13. which he ran in a
meet at Auburn two weeks ago.
Rod Dalton is USC's top hope in
the steeplechase, where Baptist's
Layne is the favorite. Davis is also
entered for Carolina.
In the three-mile, Jack Miller,
who ran the two-mile in 9:12
Saturday. Mike Drennan and Don
Layden are slated to run for USC.
Furman's Dave Koss in the pre
meet favorite.
With Billy Novo sharing the
favorite position with Baptist's
Tom Ryall in the intermediate
hurdles. USC should pick up a high
place in that race. Joe McCulloch
could also score and Wayne
Phillips is a darkhorse in the in
termediates.
Novo. who has run 52.6 in the
intermediates, is also a good bet to
finish high in the 120-vard hurdles.
