ODK members
explain policy
DEAR MS. MILLER:
The members of ODK have read
with interest Mr. Steve Leven
berg's letter of April 7 criticizing
our handling of Dr. Bob Jones' visit
to USC. We would like to clarify
some apparent misconceptions
Mr. Levenberg holds about ODK.
Omicron Delta Kappa is a
national leadership society
C composed of elected members, of
the faculty and student body. As
most other campus organizations,
ODK holds weekly meetings
luncheon in the Russell House
dining room. As a part of our
weekly program we invite guests
from many diverse fields to speak
on their area of specialty.
This semester, for example,
Senator Bristow has spoken on the
proposed medical college in
Columbia; Dr. Olin Pugh has
( spoken on the faculty-student
senate; Dr. Thomas F. Jones has
spoken on future educational
methods at USC; and, most
recently, Dr. Bob Jones, III, spoke
to us on his opposition to the
minibottle (and liquor in general).
That same day, ODK sponsored
the annual University Awards Day
ceremony at the coliseum. Dr.

ODK is NOT funded from student
activity fees; its members support
it with their dues. Our speakers do
NOT receive an honorarium; they
graciously consent to speak for
free. Our meetings are NOT open
to the public; however, anyone
interested in attending a meeting
may contact any member and
come as his guest.
Our organization places em

whole man both as a present
member of his college community
and as a prospective contributor to
a better society. Eligibility for
membership requires that a
student meet certain academic
standards and demonstrate
leadership abilities in extra
curricular activities such as
student government; social and
religious affairs; athletics;
publications; and speech, music,
drama, and the other arts.
The purposes of ODK are
threefold: one, to recognize men
who have attained a high standard
of efficiency in collegiate activities
and to inspire others to strive for
conspicuous attainments along
similar lines; two, to bring
together the most representative

Reader claims
Gamecock hoax
DEAR MS. MILLER:
The Gamecock has treated its
readers to a hoax. Perhaps the
falsified "information" was not
presented intentionally, but the
recent "Presidents have smoked
dope" story run by the
Gamecock was proved to be a
sham five months ago.
The rock magazine "Rolling
Stone," following up the "expose"
originally run by "Evergreen" of
Washington, discovered no Dr.
Burk, no American Historical
Reference Society and no evidence
that George Washington was a
junkie.
Were the Gamecock not so eager
to jump on the drug culture band
wagon, this sort of fraud could be
avoided. It would be nice if you
would quit your lobbying for all
kinds of lib and just run a
newspaper.
Marijuana may prove to be no
more dangerous than alcohol, if
that really means anything, but the.
verdict is still out. There are many
qualified experts presently holding
opposing views on the question of
legalization of the drug, but only
one side seems to make your
paper.
How can students rationally
judge marijuana, when the
Gamecock prints anything and
everything in favor of pot, in
cluding "evidence" that pot is the
inspirator of our Declaration of
Independence in 1776, while
ignoring unfavorable facts on
marijuana as reported by the
medical communities.
The question of drug usage and

legalization must certainly be
discussed. But you owe your
captive audience more than just
one side of the issue, and the entire
student body and community is
entitled to a front page apology for
your latest farce.

Typical crowd
saw Byrds
DEAR MS. MILLER:
Make the Byrds concert?
Probably not. Not too many did.
But that's good. Listen to them on
the wires in your room. The crowd
was typical Columbia:
unresponsive, greedy and AM
conscious. "Play 8 Miles High"
was screamed two minutes into the
concert.
McGuinn should have played
that and "Mr. Tambourine Man"
and walked out ... Geez, I hate to
hear this guy on the concert
committee bitch to me about the
people ... Christ, he's right! The
publicity was great, tickets cheap,
what else is there? The Byrds were
too good for the place.
I hate to say it but the only thing
obvious in the Coliseum was that
everybody usually keeps their dial
on Woody and choose every
morning between ham or bacon
with their grits. So if you're ready
for the real Byrds turn on the wires
in your room and laugh about
Columbia on Sunday nights.

Lights destroy
little privacy
DEAR MS. MILLER:
I understand that there is a
group of students planning to
renovate the A. C. Moore Garden
behind South and South Tower.
Included in this renovation will be
the installation of lights in and
around this area.
The lighting bug seems to have
become a popular trend here at the
university. This is marvelous for
safety's sake however, I feel that
there are some hidden aspects to
be considered. I've found that on
my late evening dates, after open
house hours there is no appropriate
place where a girl can take her guy
for a little intimate conversation.
What's a girl to do? I've found that

the area which is ae- renation
is a wonderful place for a little
privacy which is ofnt darately
needed. The insanoatim.f lights
here -cancels out the last of the
great parking places.
I assure you I am as respectable
as any other typical Carolina Coed
but we need places like this once
and awhile to get away from the
hum-drum of studying and all the
other activities that we normally
participate in. I hope this dilemma
is recognized and understood by
other students in the same
situation.

Goodbye,
Union
DEAR MS. MILLER:
And it happened to pass in the
rainy days of yore, that an op
portunist from the past would
bring despair to the door. He came
with his puppets and pawns all in
place and stole the salary with a
phone call race. Many were sad
dened with isolation and doom, but
still they waited for a change in the
gloom.
But when the plans were heard
and the nepotism came through, it
was exposed to several persons
whom I felt would be true. I
listened to their stories, and stories
they were, but the lies that hurt
most, were the lies from a her. She
lied to my face, whom I thought a
friend, I thought it disgrace, and
all friendship must end.
The offices were given from
friends to new friends, where
opportunity knocks, fairness must
end. Many I thought to be honest
and fair, caused me to change and
lose all my care.
I thought it was wrong that right
never lives, and I thought it was
right to believe help and give.
Something was here, I thought,
that would make me feel needed, I
could see that it wasn't, but the
warnings weren't heeded.
But I see it's all true and there's
just nothing there. No helping, no
feeling, not anything to care. "You
mustn't help others, just help
yourself. To do any else is a crime
in itself." More disposed to suffer
than right a wrong, they say, you
should try and stay in and fight all
the way. But when the cards are all
stacked and the blind ecammot see,
I'd rather get out and just live for
me.
