The USC tennis team upped its
record to 19-2 by claiming three
victories in weekend activity. On
Friday, the Gamecocks swept both
ends of a doubleheader against
Purdue 7-2, 6-3, then easily rolled
past Washington and Lee 8-1 on
Saturday.
In Friday's first match, Carolina
captured five singles and two
doubles matches to defeat the
Boilermakers, 7-2. In the top
singles pairing Kevin McCarthy
ripped Nick Giordano handily 6-1,
6-1; Brian Desatnik defeated Steve
Plump 6-2, 7-5; Tim Marks won the
number three singles against Phil
Hammond 7-6, 6-3.
Injury plagued Tom Craig was
forced to default his match with
Chuck Sanchell; after tying up the
first set at 6-all, Tom Collins
defeated Rod Johnson 6-2, 6-1; and

Taking eight first and eight
second place finishes, the USC
track team defeated Auburn and
Georgia Tech in a tri-meet,
Saturday at Auburn.
The Gamecocks picked up 81
points to the Tiger's 66 and the
Yellow Jacket's 35. Jim Small, a
USC sprinter, was the meet's only
double winner, as he won the 100 in
10.0 and the 220 in 22.0.
- In addition to Small's two wins,
Carolina took wins in two relays,
the 440 and mile, and in the high
hurdles, where Billy Novo ran 14.5,
in track events.
Guy Hornsby, Keith Eidson,
Milton Reid and Small sprinted
home in 42 flat to take the 440
relay. The mile relay team of Paul

events-- the javelin, discus and
pole vault. Tom Chapman got the
javelin win by throwing 199-3%.
Forrest Broom took the discus at
159-9%, while Bill Bryan vaulted 15 .
feet to win the pole vault.
During the meet the Gamecocks
had nine personal bests
established, and took five thirds
and seven fourths, as well as their
combined total of 16 first and
second places.
