A) Norman Wilson of the Housing Department stated that the Housing Fee paid at the beginning of the year does not include vacation days. The additional fee goes toward paying those people that remain over the holidays to supervise the open dorms. Q) Who controls dorm regulations for the Roost? We have been advised that students living at the Roost are not entitled to open housing, refrigerators, or dorm government, and they are subjected to hair and dress regulations and disciplinary actions without involvement with the student court.---Bill Wood, Clint Sloan A) According to a source in the Athletic Department the student atheletes are subjected to certain regulations set up by the department itself. These regulations are usually customary for intercollegiate athletic teams all over the country. Open housing is not allowed, because the coaches feel that such a plan would in some way disrupt the training program of the atheletes. They are, however, allowed to entertain guests in a public lounge and game room. Also an athlete is subjuect to curfew during his particular season. Athletes are put on a special diet consisting of three basic meals a day. Carry out food and fruits are also available at the cafeteria. Therefore, there is no reason for refrigerators to be kept. The captains of the teams serve in lieu of an elected body and handle any problems between players and coaches. Hair and dress codes are customary in most athletic departments across the nation. Dress codes mainly pertain to the dining room area and, according to the source, the hair regulation is not as conspicuous as many believe. Disciplinary action is handled by the athletic department, because the rules are of that department and not the university's. Captains and seniors are active with the coaches in deter mining disciplinary action. Q) Are there any constitutional or statutory restrictions on the amount of money a candidate may spend in a student election campaign? Is the candidate required to submit a record of expenditures? Obviously it takes money to run, and certain candidates spent a great deal. Why not require at least the major candidates to disclose their finances, contributors and amounts of contributions, as the Democratic presidential candidates have done? How much does it cost to run a full page ad in the Gamecock? -J.G.B. A) According to Tim McConnell, there is no restriction on the amount of money a candidate spends. He is also not required to state his ex penditures. McConnell thought that your idea was a good one, for it would possibly equalize the possibilities for all candidates to be elected. This has been done, in effect, for candidates are not allowed to place posters on university property, thus cutting down some of the expense.
