Somebody is burning rope DEAR MS. MILLER: I think y'all are making a big mistake not electing Darryl Murphy for president of the student body. Ever since we made Darryl our leader, none of us has got into any trouble. Like the time Billy saw some wire wheel hub caps he wanted on this red Triumph parked close to the Capitol. He was gonna try and steal them right then, but Darryl said he ought to wait till it got dark. So that's what he did and he didn't get caught. I also thought I ought to tell you that you misspelled "calendar" on page eight of the March 20th Gamecock. Marty's little brother Jeff bought a National Lampoon the other day. We was all of us reading it and we saw the word "--uc-". Billy said y'all wouldn't print -uc- in the Gamecock, he said you'd have to put f-k or something like that. Darryl said he had faith in your guts and he knew you would do it. Well, I guess we'll see when this letter gets printed. Have any of y'all noticed a funny smell around the dor mitories lately? Does the government care? Does society care? No, no one cares and there is no place to turn to if you do not know how to turn. He is able to work if he can find a job and make his $65.00 last till payday. That is, if he doesn't get wet and the suit shrinks or he catches cold and needs medical attention. The government just spent $8000,000.00 on a Navy contract for a torpedo which still doesn't work but they only invest $65.00 in a life saving goal. Is it any wonder then, that ex convicts spend their fifteen year stipulation on a bottle of whiskey and a hot gun? After his first dollar hamburger and two dollar x movie, he will see that his prognosis is classified from poor to catastrophic. He will find that his lack of knowledge to outthink today's world will lead him into a pitfall before nightfall. He will become emotionally improv erished in view of his pitiful tools for building a new life with insurmountable odds such as these. Laugh it off; is that the best thing for us to do? Why not just look at it realistically and admit that the world is built on a "don't call us, we'll call you" philosophy and let it go at that. If one has the intelligence, he might, just might, be able to extract his needs and some of his wants from a hostile and competitive society with all of the axioms of lie against him. The answer is not apparent. Guidances, direstion, solace, care and maintenance might be the answer. Are they? Are the half way houses ready? NO. Are the churches ready? NO. Are the in dustries of the world ready? NO. NO. Who is ready? NO ONE. They have not had time to build into this society in two hundred years a core of survival for the under-dog. Medicine treats after you become ill. Institutions lock-up after the crime is com mitted. Religion treats after you have sinned. There is no preven tative program available for anything. It is still trial and error and effect. There is no "in between". All is lost until ad hoc. When society suffers a severe rise in crime, the alleged good citizens organize to punish the criminals; but who punishes the good citizens for having permitted the criminal spirit to grow and continue to flourish in their midst? In closing, I remain an ex-convict, again a convict, and a recipient of the foregoing superlative program. JAMES HENRY MILLER Bob Jones' visit ill planned DEAR MS. MILLER: I would like to register my displeasure with the manner in which the recent visit by Dr. Bob Jones (of Bob Jones University) was handled by ODK (the leadership fraternity). Not really comprehending how any reasonable person could op pose the mini-bottle legislation, I was most interested in Dr. Jones' presentation. Technically, his lecture may have been open to the public; however, there was no advance notice given, nor was any information as to time and place available at the usual Russell House locations. - After finally determining that the presentation was to be delivered at noon in the faculty club, I arrived there to find a formal luncheon in progress, which was to be followed by the presentation. The public I assume, was not invited. There were no chairs placed for an audience other than the ones placed around the luncheon table for seated guests. I felt, feeling uncomfortably out of place and quite conspicuous. Perhaps a more propitious manner of responsibly handling the event might have been to schedule the presentation in the Russell House theatre or Capstone following lunch, so that interested members of the student body would have also been appropriate. I might also note that the event was of such magnitude that WIS TV had a newsfilm that evening of the lecture. I assume that ODK is funded from student activity fees. I also presume that Dr. Jones was given the usual honorarium for appearing. If this be true, then the members of the student body should have been afforded the opportunity to attend. STEVE LEVENBERG Two people make marriage DEAR MS. MILLER: This is a special note for Paul Ransohoff. Paul, I don't know you but you have identified yourself as one who thinks, yes, but not as deeply as your thought demands. I'm not going to criticize you or those who believe as you do. Your beliefs are your own and it is no one's place to change your ideas unless you yourself wish it so. I would like to point out that if you look deeper into your parents' relatinship, you may fnd- love, compassion, respect, and un derstanding present, also. No two people I have come in cantact with can live together without these other elements in their marriage or contract and remain partners for any length of time. Your mother served your father gladly, I'm sure, yet can it be a way to convey her feelings and thoughts to your father? When taking care of her husband, she sees to his needs becuase of their love, empasion, respect, and , and as his equal. I said as his equal becamse no man I know truly wants a lifetime partner who has no challenge for his mind, as well as her being a comforter and, perhaps, a peacemaker to the restless thoughts and frustrations bothering him. And yes, she is also a part of his sex needs, yet, most marital sex is ONE of the ex pressions of love. Tbe love may have many titles, but it is love none-the-less, in a physical form. I believe your mother serves your father in more ways than just sex and housekeeping, although those are the most obvious to the child or offspring. Yet, there is sharing involved, also.. I am in hopes that what I have said has not offended you or those who hold your opinion. I would like to ask one small favor; look at your parents in the light I have. If, after trying to visualize them as I do, you remain solid in your present belief, at least you will have tried to see another point of view; at most, great insight innto your parents. Try, will you? 'Tank you for the effort. MARIE GIOVONI Love Carolina or leave it DEAR MS. MILER: Recent letters on "Student liscontent about tickets" and "Black athletes at Carolina" are without intelligent reasoning. It would be impossible to distribute tickets equally among the students before the season. There are about 14,000 students here on campus and Carolina Coliseum holds about 12,700. It would even shock some of the Carolina students to know that USC is ranked "4" in recent polls. If students at Carolina desire a ticket to any of the games, tk;ey can easily obtain one without much trouble. Students who want tickets issued at the beginning of the semester are only interested in selling tickets to the games they do not attend thus making a little pocket money for themselves. I suppose we are to let the Gamecock Club members and other loyal supporters of the University sit at bomne, while Carolina Coliseum reserves 1,000 or more seats for those students who couldn't make it to the game. I understand about five hundred loyal supporters of Carolina flew out to see the Nevada-Carolina game at Las Vegas. Are these people to be denied tickets to home games while they attend the road games?? To let a certain percentage of blacks and a certain percentage of whites make the team and play the game is the only way one can intrepret the recent letters in the Gamecock on black athletes at Carolina. Frank McGuire is now ver his 400th win and I am sure he did not apply the above method to win his games. I intrepret the recent letters as although he is a better ballplayer he should warm the bench while the above method Is applied to satisfy a small ( Continued on pae 12
