SGA salaries to
Senate to
By CHRIS SCHWEICKERT
Staff Writer
On a roll call vote Wednesday,
Student Senate passed 12-11 a bill
to regulate student body officers'
stipends. The bill would reduce the
president's stipend from -$1,900 to
$1,000 and the other positions' pay
would be scaled to this.
Sen. Tony Daniels introduced the
bill two weeks ago and it was
called out of committee Wed
nesday. Sen. Wescoat Sandlin
spoke in favor of the bill saying
Student Government officers'
stipends were triple the amount
received by the University Union
president and other student of
ficers.
A bill to establish an on-campus
parking lot exclusively for off
campus students was also debated.
Sandlin compared the commuting
student with the stegosaurus which
he said is now extinct because of its
failure to adapt to change. He said
the student who finds it hard to get
a parking space chould cycle to
campus, and that more bike racks
should be added to compensate for
the increase. Sen. Jim Bradford
asked whether these were to be
"on-campus racks or off-campus
racks" and Sandlin remarked that
the question was "frivolous." He
then continued with his analogy.
"This campus will be destroyed
unless you start looking for a
reasonable alternative" to more
parking lots, Sandlin said.

The defenders of the bill said
students were often late to or
absent from classes because they
wasted so much time finding a
space. They also said these
students often had to park quite far
from campus.
The bill was passed 11-10 and will
now go before President Walker
for his approval.
Sen. Bradford introduced a bill
from Miami University which
states that University fees up to
$500 should be tax deductable
according to the federal govern
ment. The bill was sent to com
mittee. Bradford also announced
that representatives of American
University in Washington, D. C.,
will be at an open meeting April 6
at 3 p.m. in Room 310, Russell
House to hold an open discussion
on the University senate concept.
Senators Smith, Thomasson,
Ritter and Boliver introduced a bill
to establish a student-appointed
committee to monitor student
parking.
The roll call on the stipend vote
was as follows:
Hearing
rescheduled
for street
widening
The date for the public hearing
on the widening -of Pickens Street
has been changed to 3 p.m. April
26, according to Harold Brunton,
vice president for Business Af
fairs.
The hearing, which will be held
at Capstone, was originally
scheduled to be held during spring
vacation.
"The original hearing was
scheduled by the Highway
Department, which had no idea
that this would be during spring
vacation," Brunton said. "When
the students and the GAMECOCK
pointed this out, we contacted the
Highway Department and they
agreed that it would be a good idea
to have students at the meeting."
Brunton said that because of the
great amount of interest and the
lack of information about what the
University and the Highway
Department are proposing, a
meeting exclusively for students
will be held a week before the
public hearing. More information
about that meeting will be given at
a later date.
