Male paranoia
about feminism
DEAR MS. MILLER:
I was glad to see the letter from
Paul Ransohoff in the Wed
nesday's Gamecock; I know there
is a lot of male paranoia about
feminism and it's good to let it out
for discussion.
"A feeble attempt at respect by a
bunch of frustrated females who
are either too ugly or too lazy to
snag a man in the first place."
There are several mistakes here.
In the first place, I and most who
feel they have been rejected by
men, join the movement for
security, and these are generally
the same women who resent and
threaten men--the "off with their
balls" contingent.
As you can see, these women are
incredibly chauvinist--if they
didn't accept men's acceptance of
them as the only goal a woman
could have, they wouldn't be so
mad. Hopefully the movement will
be able to give them some self
respect. In the meantime have
patience and don't feel threatened
by them. We all have a lot of
growing still.
In the second place, my sisters
and I did not "snag" our lovers
Human respect transcends the
plots and ploys so popular in comic
books - including, conversely, the
traps commonly thought to be set
by men to get women in bed. We
need each other - why pretend we
have to play hunter and hunted? A
plotted relationship couldn't last
more than a night. If the gears fit
everything will happen naturally
Try to think of it that way. Try to
get out of the insecurity and fear 01
hunter and hunted. Without trust
there is nothing - especially nol
good sex.
In the third place, you obviously
feel that feminism is aimed
against men. I don't see how this
fallacy can still be so prevalent.
Women's Liberation is the
liberation of women from the
destructive self-concepts given
them by society--concepts which,
for example, make them feel they
have to snag a man, have to marry
and bear children to be fulfilled,
that they are too weak to open a

anything but clean house and
spend their husband's money. Can
you see these ideas are destructive
to men, how they saddle men with
unnecessary responsibilities and
fears? In this way women's lib is
men's lib.
There is as great a need for
masculinism as feminism--why
should a man be called a fag at the
least provocation, if he is slightly
built or artistically inclined? Why
should he be given impossible
ideals--Matt Helm, Paul Newman,
the "Playboy man"--to live up to?
Why .should he be indoctrinated
from childhood into feeling he has
to support a family, owes his
moneymaking to the world, that
being a worker is all he is fit for, all
emotions denied?
"Ever since the early days of
civilized existence, man has held
the dominant role." You're wrong
-reread your history. Matriarcny
lasted a long time, and it worked as
well as the present setup.
"Love is nothing more than a
psychological situation dreamt up
by writers and Hollywood
producers." See how your typical
masculine upbringing has denied
you emotions? You probably have
been so scarred you will never
know love. It does exist, and it
transcends generalizations about
either sex. Sit in the Women's
Quad one night and watch the
couples come and go, you may
begin to understand.
Your letter infuriated me, Paul,
but I hope I've kept my fury under
control. You need explanations and
understanding more than
profanity. I hope someday a
woman will be able to teach you all
this clearly; I hope you will let her
and I wish her patience.

DEAR MS. MILLER:
I would like to explain to Paul
Ransohoff, who has obviously
-eached desperation in his

'Not a bunch
of yahoos'
DEAR MS. MILLER:
Some people are so selfish!
Jamin McCauley is only thinking
of herself. Why don't you tell it like
it really is, Jamin. Your pride was
hurt. What do people like you
expect from our boys? They're
only human - not a bunch of in
sensitive yahoos! Did you want
them to build a platform and give
you a personal performance?
Come off it! If you were truly a fan
of the Gamecocks you wouldn't be
so ready to criticize them for such
trivialities. Fans like you, we don't
need.
Put yourself in their position.
Maybe they don't enjoy being
looked upon as celebrities. How
would you like to be bombarded
with prank phone calls or
overeager kids seeking
autographs. Not really enough
time for themselves, is there?
Sure, the boys were exhausted. Not
only had they flown from
Williamsburg, Va. to Columbia, S.
C., but prior to this, had played an
energy draining ballgame.
You said that they could have
least "pretended" to be ecstatic

would you have written such an

I guess we've gotten our point

Maybe you better take a close look
