It isn't often that a new coach in any sport
gets his school back on the winning track im
mediately, but fledgling Carolina tennis coach
Ron Smarr has done just that his season. His
Gamecock netmen have have run up an 10-0
record so far this year after being only 8-11
during all of last year.
"We've won the close matches so far," said
Smarr, who came to USC after winning two
consecutive national junior college titles at
Wingate Junior College in North Carolina.
"And we have had the advantage of playing at
home. But I have been real pleased with the
way our team has responded to the challenge
and come from behind in several instances to
win."
The Gamecocks have allowed their op
ponents to win only 15 individual matches in
their first 10 outings have have been getting
strong performances throughout the lineup in
running up their win streak.

The meet is divided into three
the open, college, and freshman
and junior college--sections. The
Gamecocks have twenty men
entered in four relay and eight
individual events in the college
class, and three performers are
slated to compete in three in
dividual freshman-junior college
events.
Three of Carolina's top per
formers are either out of the meet
or question marks for the meet
because of physical problems.
Sprinter Milton Reid will be left in
Columbia because of his sore
hamstring, while distance runner
Jack Miller is down with the
measles. Shot-discus man Rich
Sorin is a question mark with a
recurring back problem.Ket
Carolina coach Bill McClure wilrnnsedo
expects two of his relay teams to Gmccsac
do well, and maybe bring home
the first place medal.
"Our best chances to win are
with the two-mile relay and the
sprint medley relay," McClure
said.
If the two-mile quartet does turn
in a winning time, it will mark the
second consecutive week-end of
relay competition that the relay
team has won. Last week the
foursome of Don Brown, Bob
Dempsey, Mike Sheley and Jim
Schaper broke the tape at the
Furman-News-Piedmont Relays
with a 7:38.6 time.
At the Greenville relays last
Saturday, the other USC high hope
for Florida, the sprint medley
team, finished fourth in a time of
3:21.6.
"We didn't have our fastest team
in that race," the USC head coach
said. "And it was late in the meet
after some of our runners had run3Q ,
in a couple other races."

"Brian Desatnik, a sophomore from South
Africa, is our only undefeated man, playing at
the number two position, but number one man
Kevin McCarthy has made some great
comebacks in compiling a 7-1 won-lost record."
said Smarr, following the eighth Gamecock
win. "Art Kamm has really come on as our
number six man, while junior college transfer
Tom Collins has done a fine job at number five
going 7-1. We have also gotten good play in the
middle from Tim Marks and Tom Craig at
numbers three and four, since they have
combined for a 13-3 record."
Smarr's squad will begin a spring vacation
rip to Florida by tackling strong Georgia at
A-hens Friday.
"Georgia is definitely one of the top ten
-eams in the nation." admitted Smarr, "and
we'll have our work cut out for us. It should be
our biggest challenge to date this season."

Dan Loshack Dempsey, McLeod

will exchange the baton again. For
the first time this year USC will
compete in an 880 relay, with Guy
Hornsby, Small, Edison and
McLeod handling the exchanges.
Discus winner Saturday, Forrest
Broom will throw the shot as well
as the discus. Broom's heave of
168-10 gave him the title in
Greenville. If his back problem
subsides, Sorin will compete in the
same two events as Broom.
Hurdlers Billy Novo and Joe
McCulloch will run the 130 high and
