Players snub waiting fans DEAR MS. MILLER: Saturday night after we defeated Temple in a- very close -game, several friends and I decided it would be really great to go to the airport and meet the team as they arrived back in Columbia. After waiting almost an hour, we finally saw the team's plane land, but because we were so excited after the fantastic victory, we decided it would be even greater to drive back to the Roost and extend our congratulations there, in perhaps a little more relaxed atmosphere. We very quickly learned that it isn't "great" at all to go to any trouble to commend our basketball team for anything. As Jimmy Powell, Danny Traylor, Casey Manning, Rick Mousa and Rick Aydlett got off the bus, the 20 or so of us there, clapped and cheered only to be completely ignored and almost embarrassed. Casey Manning managed a smile in reply to our cheers, but I was afraid Danny Traylor would trip while walking through the shrubs in order to avoid the fans- who were there. A few minutes later when Tommy Riker walked through and someone shouted "good game, Tommy," he did recognize our presence with a wave of his hand, a big smile, and a "thanks." That did make our efforts a little less futile. With the exception of the two above mentioned and those like Kevin Joyce, Bobby Carver and GET EVE? If the fans are always treated that way after they a do make an effort to show the team their pride and enthusiasm, it's no' wonder no more showed up than did. I wonder If the team wouldn't be disappointed If no one showed up at any of the basketball games to cheer for them? As proud and conceited as they seemed to be, perhaps they wouldn't care less. Even after taking 'into con sideration that the boys were tired and perhaps wanted to be out of the spotlight, it seems they could at least "pretend" they're glad the rest of the Carolina students are behind them. It makes me wonder why some students stand in line or spend the night on the concrete in front of the Coliseum to get tickets if the team doesn't care who comes to the games. We didn't expect personal acknowledgement or special treatment from the team at the Roost, we just thought they might have at least been glad that some students were proud of them enough to drive to the Airport or Roost and welcome them home. Perhaps it is better to be an epathetic student-at least you don't feel humiliated when you put forth no effort at all! Recently the walls, doors, even trees around campus have displayed a poster offering summer work and possible scholarships for college men. These posters are most prominently displayed at the Russell House, which has specific standards posters must meet before they can be displayed. We have been unable to find out exactly what these standards are, but the Russell House by sanc tioning a discriminatory poster, is participating in an illegal act. Occupational discrimination based on sex is illegal according to the 1968 Civil Rights Act. Also, the meeting for men in terested in this summer work is to be held in Room 323 of the Russell House. Is the Russell House open to outside groups of a discriminatory nature? We doubt sincerely that the Ku Klux Klan would be allowed the use of the University space. We admit that we have been unable to obtain sufficient in formation on the organization offering this summer work. We have sent in the applications of fered on some of the posters to the Southeastern Showcase College Director, the unknown figure to whom the applications are ad dressed. Although we sent these three weeks ago with a note asking why the opportunity is for men only, we have not as yet received a reply." MILLER: We read with great interest Mr. Fellenbaum's "University Analysis" in Friday's Gamecock. We agree that the office of President of the student body takes someone who is a skillful politician, has finesse, and is clearly a student's man. We also agree that there is only one person qualified for the job. However, we are not of the author's mind as to those who are the greatest. We maintain that the only candidate who will really work for the students and who really cares about us is Dave Spinazzolo. He hasn't spent the last weeks running all over the campus promising us the world. He's a worker - leave the empty promises to other candidates. The men on the Horseshoe know what it's like to have a government that actually touches our campus life. Some of us live there. Where Dave Spinazzolo works for us. Others of us have worked with Spinazzolo and are convinced by his ability to work with those members of the administration who can get things done for the students. Of course, the ad ministration must be treated as human. Of course, we need a key lobbist. Of course, we need ex perieience and dedication. We need Dave Spinazzolo. Spinazzolo stuc'k'his-neck out for the students when ne tought for the abolition of women's curfew, extension of visitation hours, a coed living-learning center in Preston, the complete renovation of the .Horseshoe and a University Senate. I had made a b1rthday cake for a friend of mine which I had to leave at the main desk while I went ilp to my room. I and behold, when I came downstairs again the cake was gone! Now, what could happen to an innocent little bhthday cake in Capstone at eleven thirty at night? Well, several girls came by the desk and took the cake over to some friends and let their friends eat the cake I had made for MY friend. I found this to be very strange as I did not know any of these girls, nor could I think of any reason why they would take a birthday cake, of all things, that didn't belong to them. Well, so much for Serlock Holmes. In this case, an analogy to a nursery rhyme would have been more appropriate, but I just couldn't think of a single one!
