Kevin Joyce fired in an un
believable 17-foot jump shot with
only two seconds remaining to lift
the Gamecocks to a 53-51 victory
over Temple in the first round of
the NCAA tournament.
USC's victory in the quarter
final round advances them to the
East Regionals, at Morgantown,
W. Va., in which they will face
North Carolin's Tar Heels, the
winners of the ACC tournament.
Joyce's winning basket made
Carolina's strategy of stalling
away the final 37 seconds of the
game, in an attempt to take the
final shot, successful. Joyce and
Bob Carver had passed the ball
back and forth outside the Owl 3-2
zone, killing the clock and setting

"I don't know where I was when
I took the shot," said Kevin Joyce
of his game winning shot against
Temple Saturday night. "I just
stopped, jumped forward and put
the shot up."
Joyce scored only 12 points in the
53-51 Carolina victory, but four of
his points came on two very im
portant shots which occured in the
closing seconds of both the first
and second half.
The game winning shot came
with only two seconds remaining
on the official clock, after Joyce
and Bob Carver successfully
stalled the clock down from the 37
second mark with outside passes
while Temple remained en
trenched in their 3-2 zone.
With only seconds showing in the
game, Joyce took the ball, dribbled
to his right, leaped be
tween a crowd of Owls and pushed
off a jump shot which unbelievably
passed through the basket.

Carolina had taken a 51-47 lead
with 2:01 in the game, but Tem
ple's*Ollie Johnson scored two
straight field goals, the second on a
driving layup on which he eluded
Tom Riker and knotted the score,
51-51.
Carolina had tumbled behind
early in the initial half and on three
occasions the Owls had stretched
their lead to ten points. With
Temple holding .a 29-20 margin,
Carolina reeled off five straight
points, three by Riker at the foul
line and two coming on a Joyce
jumper with only three seconds to
pull back to within four, 29-25, at
halftime.
Suffering another slow stretch at
the onset of tie second period,
Carolina saw Temple jump to a ten

the Gamecocks have used before in
losses to Marquette and Villanova.
"With seven seconds left Kevin is
supposed to start to take the shot. I
think he took it with a little less,
like about four.
"It was about time we got the
break and win one like this,"
continued Traylor.
