The joke called
student election
DEAR MS. MILLER:
After observing the farce that
occurred during election
registration, I can see that the
inept student government that is
now in office will be replaced by
people who are just as inept. The
names of the officers may change,
but the type of government now in
existence will be with us for a long
time.
While sitting at the registration
table, I learned of the following:
1. Kathy Jennings, who is
running for the office of vice
president, has already started
distributing handouts. The rules
plainly state that material such as
this cannot be handed out until
March 21.
2. One gentleman, who is an off
campus graduate student running
for the office of senator declared
that the choice tickets offered to
student to student government
officers was his reason for seeking
office. He thought the small

amount of time taken up by his
senate duties would be much less
than waiting in line at the Coliseum
for tickets.
3. In many senate districts,
people are running unopposed.
Also, in some districts four senate
seats may be open, with only two
people running for the four seats.
The above examples are typical
of the way elections are run at
USC. In the first example, you
have a flagrant violation of the
election rules. In the second
example, you have someone who is
running for all the wrong reason.)
In the third example, you see
apathy the student body has
towards the election. It certainly
seems as if the coming election
will change nothing.
Granted there may be people
running for office who are truly
interested in the welfare of the
student body. But it is my opinion
that most of the people running for
office do so for personal gain,
whether it be choice tickets or
inflated egos.
The joke that is called student

No convulsions
of mediocrity
DEAR MS. MILLER:
I would appreciate the op
portunity to place several things
back in their proper perspective
concerning the contents of Talley
Parrott's letter of March 6.
Parrott does not speak on my
behalf since I did not experience a
convulsion of mediocrity upon
seeing McKendree Spring or New
York Rock Ensemble. Let me also
remind him that stated fact and
fact and his stated opinions, when
paralleled, do not necessarily go
hand in hand.
My final conclusions concerning
the concert were based on what
gave me the most listening
pleasure. There is no denying that
Mahavishau has some talent.
Otherwise they would not have
been on the stage at all, but I found
them rather boring after the first
15 minutes or so. There were no
real innovations as far as I could
see. Personally I thought that
McKendree Spring's violinist was
more talent laden than the one
playing for Mahavishnu, and I
really didn't think that
Mahavishnu's lead guitarist was of
superstar genre.
If Parrott's theory governing
the judgement of all music were to
hold true for anything that came
along then perhaps one day we
would hear a brilliantly

unique,amazingly innovatory,

according to Parrott, these
characteristics would constitute
sound ground for immediate
praise.
Finally let me say that as a

and a U.S. citizen by birth, my own
"puny invectives" get just as
many points as Parrott's do.

Ask your son
for a joint
DEAR MS. MILLER:
As anybody knows that has ever
smoked any grass, the main drug
problem is people getting busted
for possession of marijuana. I
have been smoking for almost six
years and haven't noticed any
decline in my mental faculties or
raped any unobliging females
when I was stoned.
All I have experienced are
many enjoyable evenings sitting
with friends and listening to music
or going to a flick or anything that
you do when you are stoned. Of
course you can go overboard on
anything. Some people will at
tempt to stay stoned all the time
and be unhappy, but the problem
there isn't the grass, it's the
people. If they were not
smoking, they would probably be
drinking which many peple can

amount of smoking. H ow long

Well, ignorance
strikes again
DEAR MS. MILLER:
Well,, Mr. No Name, ignorance
strikes again. You attack Dean
Alexander for performing his job
and lump him into a faceless mom
called the administration. It is so
easy to verbally attak somene
you do not know. This seems to be
popular with some studenst. lt's
look cool and bitch at that ad
ministration for some inane act.
Please don't misunderstand me. I
am not attempting to defend in
anyway the individuals of the
administration. But I am saytng
before you attack, know the peson
who you are accusing and know the
reasoning behind his acts.
You said 'if' there had been a
good movie and 'if' Dean'
Alexander had stayed longer, it
was no accident that both of those
arguments are negative. It also
seems as if you would be em
barrassed to say, you were hdd up
the great total of five minutes.
In conclusion you should take
some time to learn about 0ean
Alexander, a man who knows his
stuff. He applies all of his ability to
helping the students in all areas of
the university and outside if
need be. Talk to him, another one
of those 'administration' fellows.
And if you are not proud enough of
your name to sign it well, then why
not change it?
