Kevin McCarthy, first singles player for
USC's tennis team, returns a volley in
Tuesday's action with East Tennessee
Netmen defea
face Furman'

In tennis action Monday and Tuesday the
Carolina tennis team defeated East Tennessee
State twice by identical 8-1 scores. The two
victories raise the Gamecock netters record to
a spotless 4-0 mark, excluding an 8-1 exhibition
defeat of Presbyterian College.
The two wins atoned for a loss suffered to
East Tennessee last season.
In the singles matches on Monday, Kevin
McCarthy defeated Linwood Simpson 7-5-, 6-4,
Brian Desatnik dumped Jim Richardson 6-3, 6-0
and Tom Collins surpassed Bill Ingles by 6-2
and 6-1 scores.
In the other singles matches Tim Marks
defeated Jack Swart 6-1, 6-3, Tom Craig
bumped Ron Lagendyk 6-2 and 6-4 while Mark
Rosenblum passed Mike Colvin with 6-1 and 6-3

"But of course, they might not have been too objective
either.
"South Carolina just does not play the type of basketball
for Eddie. He's a run and shoot player. You got to un
derstand, people here in Washington think he's one of the
best shooters that God ever put on this earth.
"I think his father thought that McGuire wanted a team
from the same area which knew each other," he con
tinued. "And realized that Ed just didn't fit in. After all, we
know that Eddie could go someplace else and score 25
points a game."'
Gamecock assistant coach Donnie Walsh, who also
coached Peterson as a freshman, stated, "The reason the
boy left was because he wasn't playing, and it's just that
simple. Naturally Eddie was upset. He's a competitior,
and he's certainly a good player.
"He had convinced himself that he wouldn't play for this
team, and that just wasn't the case. But we couldn't
guarantee that he'd start. We can't flat guarantee anyone
that they'll start for us.''
As of this moment, Peterson is in Athens with University
of Georgia basketball coach Kei, Rosen, who, when asked
if Peterson could be reached, promptly answered "No,'
and hung up the phone. Following his trek to Athens,
Peterson will be in Alabama until late in the week, when he
will return home.
Why Peterson left this school still remains a paradox,
however. Or perhaps it would be better to ask- whether it
really was Ed who convinced himself that he wouldn't
play, or another member of his immediate family.
"If you were 19 years old, and had to make a decision
like this,"' asks Boswell, "could you make it yourself, or
would you look to your family?."
I'm not a sophomore basketball player with a good touch
from outside.. and a persuasive father.
