Locke-'We held poise' By GARY WEST Sports Writer Clemson's Tates Locke, as most coaches who have ventured into Carolina Coliseum this season, was very impressed by the Carolina team that has defeated his Tigers 77-64. The youthful Locke, in his second year of rebuilding at Clemson, began discussing his team's defeat, a position he has un fortunately become accustomed to in a year of frustrating losses which he hopes to change in the near future. "We got it down to five and got the ball into Angel (Dave) twice, but didn't come up with anything. The kids held their poise well tonight. I can't fault their per formance, frankly it was a good performance. Just when you think you're catching up with them, here comes along a super player to make a super play. Kevin Joyce has got to be Clark Kent and Riker (Tom) came to play in the second half. Frank's (McGuire) got a good ball club and I wish him well in the playoffs." Locke who stresses defense and a ball control offense described his team's performance. "I thought we did a good job on the boards in the second half, but our defense was spotty at times. The key phase of the game was when we held them scoreless for five minutes, but we didn't score either." On the other side of the coin coach Frank McGuire, ending the regular season campaign with his 22 victories and in preparation for the quarterfinals of the Eastern Regionals, was once again pleased with victory. "We got some great play from Tommy Riker, Bob Carver and Rick Aydlett and it was great for them to go out with a win on the home floor. "Riker missed some underneath that he never misses, I hope that he's saving it for Temple. I thought that our substitutes did a good job tonight. Casey Manning and Rick Mousa came off the bench and played well. Most people over look those substitutes." After Danny Traylor had fouled out with 8:25 remaining to be played, Bobby Carver hit two shots from the foul line and Tom Riker scored a layup and two more from the stripe, as the Gamecocks broke the game open, not allowing the Tigers to come any closer than five points for the remainder of the contest. Carolina looked as if it was going to blow Clemson off the court from the outset, taking early leads of 19 8 and 24-12. But from the 24-12 advantage at 10:18, USC could manage only five points in the next five minutes, and was unable to build up a comfortable margin. Storming to a 50-38 lead with about seven minutes gone in the final half, the Gamecocks saw their lead diminish rapidly. Clemson outscored Carolina 12-3 from 13:19 to 8:25, primarily on the efforts of 6-11 David Angel, who dropped in five points during the burst. However, USC broke the 53-50 game open and outscored the Tigers 24-12 down the homestretch, sending the visitors reeling to their second loss of the season at the hands of the Gamecocks. rived!! ment of its.pants off only) new spring ryday R STREET C HORSESHOE) defeats C r-season f, The game, which was slow paced in a style characteristic of Clemson's play all year, saw the Tigers lose two men by virtue of fouls, while USC lost three: Riker, TIME IS RUNNING for applic AIR FORCE ROTC Tl IF YOI - interested - physically - in good ac AND IF YOU ( - $100 a - a job t - up to I THEN CON Department of A BARNWELL COL 777-4135 But Hurry Time I Hlow much do diam A If you're like most younc know very little.
