Socialist speaks on women s goals By SHARON EDSALL Staff Writer Alice Conner, socialist candidate for the U.S. Senate from Georgia, spoke last night on how the goals of women can be met by political action and the need for the right to "control our own mind and body." Conner stressed the fact that the two party system's primary interest is to control our lives by lying r.nd deceiving. She claims that politicians today offer positions for women to "woo women voters"' and that actually they are frightened by the political strength of women. "To eliminate sexism, a fundamental reconstructing of society is required,"' says Conner who has become a prominent leader of the antiwar and socialist movements in Georgia. She adds that the biggest mistake the feminist could make would be to jump on the Nixon trairi in the upcoming election. ''We need to defeat the two party system and build the feminist movement independently of the par ties." The socialist platform .stands on solid issues. They call for immediate and unconditional withdrawal of troops from Vietnam, the repeal of all anti-abortion laws and black control in the black community. It is unlike the two major parties in that the Socialist Party states their position exactly, whereas in the case of the Democrats, Conner refers to their eposition as the ''embodiment of unprincipled politics." She stated that the most important factor in a political party is that their platform should spell out exactly their position on every issue. Conner was one of the founders of Emory's Women's Liberation and she has taught classes on feminism at the Emory Free University, lectured to Atlanta area civic clubs, addressed numerous university classes on topics related to the women's movement, and appeared on tel evision and radio in opposition to the Georgia Abortion Law. Conner commented that while the Democrats and Republicans were busy forming their images for the election in November, the socialists were working on the current issues and preparing to cope with the nation's problems. In conclusion she stressed the need for a united mass front in order to achieve the socialist goal. Theatre rel at southeac About 1,500 representatives of community, educational and children's theatre begin arriving in Columbia today as the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) convenes here. The meeting opens today with registration at the Wade Hampton Hotel and program activities continue through Saturday. A highlight of the convention is a Thursday luncheon at which Roger Stevens, chairman of the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, will speak. Stevens is a former chairman of National Council for the Arts and of the National Endowment for the Arts. A successful theatrical pr oducer in the early 1960s, Stevens Wmng spendtc resentativ tern confel was producing partner for such Broadway shows as "West Side Story," "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and "Bus Stop." Hosts for the meeting are the USC Theatre, Columbia College Theatre and Town Theater of Columbia. Some noted theatre persons to participate in the meeting, in addition to Stevens, will be John Patrick, author of "Tea House of the August Moon"; Fred Garrett, manager of the Negro Ensemble, New York City; Robert Kalfin, director of the Chelsea Theatre, New York; and Rolf Fjelde, author of the original play which the USC Theatre will produce this week. Russell Green of USC is directing the play. In addition to a number of panel discussions and lecture demonstrations on various aspects of theatre, the SETC convention program also will include auditions by more than 500 actors, singers and dancers for summer theatre roles around the nation, including USC's Myrtle Beach program. iPECIAL led.-Thurs. i.
