Ziegler as bad as Thurmond DEAR MS. MILLER: Recently on campus there has been a drive to familiarize the students of this campus with Nick Ziegler, candidate against Strom Thurmond. I'd like to ask the students of South Carolina, par ticularly those that claim to be Democrats, exactly what they are trying to do. Choosing between Thurmond and Ziegler is about like choosing the lesser of two evils. Thurmond claims to be a Republican, and Ziegler claims to be a Democrat, but could you tell me where else they differ? They don't. For people who do not like the policies and dealings of Strom Thurmond, why not try to get a candidate that has a different platform and different beliefs? If the Democrats of South Carolina really want Thurmond out of office, at least have a can didate that will not continue where Mr. Thurmond leaves ofi. Letters believes, thinks, and acts different than Thurmond. It seems with all the possible candidates available, Ziegler would be about the worst choice for anyone who opposes Strom Thurmond. I therefore plead with the people and the Democratic Party of South Carolina to give us a candidate we can vote for! As it stands now, there's really no need for me to vote for a U. S. Senator this time, because neither of them differ. If I vote for one, why not the other. ALAN REAMES The injustice of milk prices DEAR MS. MILLER: It is true that a merchant in Charleston, South Carolina has been sent to jail to serve three months. He has been sent to jail because he sold milk for 49 cents per gallon. I feel this is a great injustice to the independent merchant. Our system must be getting very corrupt or extremely powerful if it can send someone to jail for selling a product such as milk. I wish you would make an in vestigation into this case and publish an article on the corrupt ness of the Dairy Commission and the injustice of this case. RUSSELL RICHARDSON Against SCPIRG DEAR MS. MILLER: There were two responses to my recent letter concerning SCPIRG. My reply to them is set forth separately below. 1. Reply to Ulmer: I would like to point out Ulmer's blatant contradiction of decrying my letter as "half-truth and name calling," and in the next breath name-calling me "childish and extreme". It would seem to follow that Ulmer may also engage in half-truths. However, if someone were credulous and-or stupid he might have written a letter like Ulmer's in good-faith (but that is not likely when you consider that the simple, basic concept behind SCPIRG is fraud). If Ulmer's apparent confusion is real it may be because The GAMECOCK inadvertantly left out WeIk showi call us at a line in my orginal letter. To clarify my allegations. I ask that the following first paragraph be reprinted: The promoters of SCPIRG know and intend it to be a fraud. This is verified by two basic facts: First, SCPIRG petitioners are urged to sign by promoters who strongly em phasize the voluntariness of membership due to the refund. However, those promoters know from PIRG experiences elsewhere that refund-takers will be few, thus providing a strong argument for the discontinuance of any refunds. Secondly, potential petitioners are led to believe that SCPIRG is a new concept that will somehow allow "the students" to legitimately buck the establishment. However, SC PIRG as proposed is clearly establishment in concept. It is to be a corporation in form, and it is to have governmental taxing power over its subjects. The real hooker here is that, unlike corporations, SCPIRG's owners will not be able to dissolve it and that its govern mental-like power will lack the control of usual checks and balances. Moreover, grassroot control by the elective process is precluded automatically by the maze of a corporate structure. As for Ulmer's stress on SCPIR( "going to the students," the reasot is simple: Shysters and conmei always seekout their victims. I Ulmer and the rest of SCPIRG' inner-circle think that theirs ha been an "exhausting petitioi campaign" they should try ap proaching USC students honestly by asking them to sign-up foi SCPIRG membership and bi collecting the initial $3.00 due from each student as they go. 2. Reply to Mr. Warren: Warren's letter (in Thi GAMECOCK, 2-18-72) almos prompted me to remain silen since it does not deserve any reply USC students, on the other hand deserve to know (1) that I was no lying and (2) that I am not "totall, uninformed" concerning, SC PIRG. If those two premises aro accepted (the reader must, o course, decide), then it follows tha Mr. Warren himself was lying. I have read and have in m1 possession a document entitled SCPIRG---A PROSPECTUS (on4 of the earlier copies where th4 promoters were asking $1.00 pei )Ve ng your love 254-8105 issom student per semester. Inflation's hell ain't it!) Noted in the margin thereof is the fact that SCPIRG now seeks $3.00 per student per year. In addition to that I have read and retained the following pro-SCPIRG articles and letters in The GAMEOCK: (listed by date and page numbers respectively) 1 19-72, p.5; 1-21-72, p.2, 3; 1-24-72, p.3; 1-31-72, pp, 3, 4; 2-4-72, p.3; 2 18-72, p.2. Further, I recall having read a one page propaganda cir cular that was obviously written by SCPIRG's promoters. And finally, there was the pro-SCPIRG in terview on WIS radio featuring some of SCPIRG's promoters in their new finery. No, Mr. Warren, I am not - uninformed. However, it does not necessarily follow that I have not been misinformed. Please take note that Warren claims over 8,000 petitioners. I based my estimate of nearly 10,000 petitioners on the boldly printed pro-SCPIRG article on p.3 of The GAMECOCK of 1-24-72 (a month ago), which then claimed that 8,000 petitioners had signed in support of SCPIRG. Warren points to the high refund rate of 20 per cent in Oregon. He fails to mention that the usual refund-takers are closer to 2 per cent of the students assessed. (See, eg. Trinkley's letter in the GAMECOCK of 2-23-72). Thus, experiences (known best by PIRG promoters) substantiate my earlier assertion that refund takers are expected to be few. The balance of Warren's letter is too absurd to reply to in detail. It r would be noted however, that before "SCPIRG's Local Board becomes a reality on the Carolina campus" I intend to both -1"criticize" and "work on solutions" to a serious problem that affects students: SCPIRG.
