By STEVE PARKER
Asst. Sports Editor'
Star Biddie center Clyde Agnew
will return to action Wednesday
night against the Citadel Plebes at
Carolina Coliseum.
"1 still haven't talked to the
doctor," said freshman team
coach Donnie Walsh, "but if he
says that playing Agnew will not
'endanger his future, then he'll be
starting."
Agnew last saw action for the
freshman on January 25 when the
Biddies routed Palmer JC. Since
then Agnew has retired to the
bench, the victim of calcium
deposits on his thigh. .
The 6-8 center will return to the
frosh lineup as the team's second
leading scorer, hitting at a clip of
21.7 pants a game, following onuly
Tommy Cox.
"He is one-half of our attack,"
said Walsh,' "He is dveraging
about 21 points an outing, and
about 15 rebounds a game. His.
return should help a great deal.
"But the big thing is. hir, future.

held at West Point, Mar. 22-24.
Chip Newman was the only
Carolina swimmer to come home
with an first place finish turning in
a 21.8 clocking in the 50-yard
freestyle event.
Setting school records for the
Carolina cause were: Charles
Shoemaker, in finishing sixth
overall, set an USC mark in the
1,650 yard freestyle, the 400-yard
medley relay team of Casey
Claflin, Jeff Nuebert, Jim Villa
and John Poole swept to a second
place finish with a time of 3:39.9
and the 400-yard freestyle relay of
Roger Rice, Newman, Bob Cottam
and Glen Spears was clocked in
3:13.1 which left them in the
runner-up position and only sixth
tenths of a second off the time
needed to qualify for the nationals.
Also finishing high enough to
earn points for the USC attack
were these swimmers: Kim
Douglas, placing second in the 200
breaststroke and eighth in the 400
individual medley contest; Toby
Kerr, finishing third in the 200
breaststroke and eleventh in the
400 individual medley, Newman,
placing second in the 100 freestyle,
while Spears finished third in the
same event, Nuebert, finishing
with a fifth place in the 200
breaststroke, Bob Warner,
finishing sixth in the 500 freestyle,
Claflin, placing fifth in the 200

Agnew has not yet worked out
with the team, but will begin
workouts for tomorrow's contest
this afternoon. "I feel great and
I'm ready to go" said the Biddie
center.
"I'm really anxious to get back
in action," continued Agnew. "The
doctor's report was really a
suprise.
"I should be okay, as long as I'm
not hit on the knee again. I'll be
wearing a pad on my knee, like the
kind they use in football, and it
should protect me,,' said Agnew.
The return of Agnew to the
Biddie lineup will mean that Cox
must partially relinquish the
cente.r position he's been manning
in Agnew's absence. Accordin~g tjo
Walsh, the two will be alternating
between the inside and outside
positions.
"Tommy did a real good -job in
Clyde's absence, he has been doing
exactly as I thought he would.

McGuire: 'One
cold spell hurt'
(Continued from page 8)
Houston was charged with just four.
Davis and Riker led all scorers with 26 points apiece,
Davis scoring 21 in the opening period. Riker also won the
individual board honors, clearing 15 rebounds to Davis' 13.
Joyce scored 25 in the contest, followed by Aydlett's 13
and Carver's 12. Davis was supported by Hayes' career
high of 23 tallies, Newsome's 19 and 16 by Dwight Jones.
Houston also dominated two other important categories,
outrebounding USC 40-32, while turning the ball over seven
times, half of the Carolina total.
"That one cold spell in the second half is what did it,"
said USC mentor Frank McGuire, who saw his team's
record fall to 17-4. "Then they got hot and got that lead.
"There was nothing we didn't try," he continued. "We
threw a zone and a man to man at them, but nothing
worked. They have everything: height, jumping ability
and shooting ability."
McGuire then cited the two calls which may have turned
the game around. "We're down by three when Rick
(Aydlett) fouled out," he explained. "Then three minutes
later, we're down by eight.
"And that call where the loose ball went out of bounds
and they charged Carver with the foul," he said, in
reference to the incident at the 5:52 mark of the second
half, with USC down by three, 73-70. "That killed us. That
call took the game away from our team..
"Nothing went wrong. They just scored mgge,points4
than we did. We pblayed a fairly good game, They play a
tough outside -and kept us from getting It inside. Houston~
was just up for a nationally ranked team."
"Their jumping jacks just kept us from getting the of
fensive rebounds," he concluded. "This team is just like
Guy Lewis' (Houston coach) teams of the past: big and
Wpiping. Eihty're very good, and I'd like to see the five
