LAS VEGAS...USC withstood a
furious second-half rush by the
University of Nevada-Las Vegas,
to nip the Rebels, 84-81, here
Wednesday night.
Down 76-67 with 5:01 remaining
to play UNLV's Bobby Florence
led the Rebels back to an 81-81 tie
before Kevin Joyce dropped in
three free throws to ice the game.
Oddly enough, Joyce took the
ball upcourt with Carolina ahead,
82-81, at the 0:17 mark, but was not
fouled until four seconds
remained.
When UNLV retained possesion,
Booker Washington's half-court
shot fell short.
The Gamecocks carried a ten
point, 47-37, lead into the second
half. The margin swelled to 58-45
four minutes into the period until
UNLV began to methodically peck
away at the Carolina lead.
Washington hit two baskets from
outside to cut the advantage to 60
51 with eight minutes gone. Bobby
Carver scored and Joyce con
verted a one and one to offset two
layups by Florence.
Joyce again connected from the
field to bring the USC lead back to
nine, 66-57. But, the Rebels reeled
off four straight points, dropping
the margin to five.
Tom Riker and Brian Winters
then each scored two from the
charity stripe. Danny Traylor hit
from in close twice, and the
Gamecocks again led by nine, 74
65.
Florence followed two jump
shots and Ed Carmen connected

from the corner. Norman Knowles
converted a one and one and
Carolina's big lead was narrowed
to three, 77-74.
But the Gamecocks refused to
fold, as Joyce scored on a jumi ir
from the lane and Riker tippet. a
stray shot in, USC gaining their
17th win in twenty outings.
The Gamecocks pulled away
from a 22-22 tie midway through
the first half behind the hot
shooting of Rick Aydlett. Aydlett
scored 14 and Riker ten in the
opening period as USC forged to a
47-33 lead before intermission.
Florence led all scorers with 23
points, followed by Aydlett's 22.
Washington added 20 for the
Rebels and Jerry Baskerville 14.
Behind Aydlett for the
Gamecocks came Riker with 17,
Joyce 16, and Traylor who hit 15.
In a surprising statistic, the
smaller Rebels won the reboun
ding battle, 51-30, Florence leading
the way with 12. Riker had 11 for
Carolina.
"They were up, and we expectd a
tough one," said USC mentor
Frank McGuire," this was like an
intersectional rivalry, the at
mosphere was really something
but the players got used to it.
"That Florence is fantastic," he
said, refering to the Rebels' 6-5
sophmore forward. "He looks and
plays a lot like Earl Monroe."
McGuire was also lavish in his
praise of the rest of the UNLV
squad, "They are a good smart
ballclub and should win a lot of
games. There are not many teams
that can come in here and beat
them."
The Gamecock coach also
praised the composure of this
team. "This is the youngest team
I've ever coached, and they just
didn't crack," he said.
"There at the end, I just told
Kevin to be cool. We didn't panic.
This is a completely new outfit,
and it amazes me how they can
keep going."

Biddie win
The USC freshmen, placing four

another strong performance by 6-6

tributed 37 points and 20 rebounds
to the balanced USC attack. He
was followed by Jim Walsh with 19,

The win snapped a three game
losing streak for the Biddies and
upped their overall record to 10-7.
The Biddies coasted in the first

intermission, 48-32. Winsalm
came back strong in the second
