Schaper tocompete Standout Carolina sophomore middle distance runner Jim Schaper has been invited to run in a special 1000 meter race at the United States Olympic Invitational Indoor Meet to be held Friday night in New York's Madison Square Garden. The elite five man entry list includes some of the most outstanding indoor runners in the nation and Schaper will be the only undergraduate collegiate per former in the field. The star-studded lineup for the John Woodruff 1000 Meter Run, as the event is named, includes Olympian Tom Von Ruden, who two weeks ago ran a 3:56.6 mile indoors at Ft. Worth, Tex., former Villanova standouts Chris Mason and Frank Murphy, and ex-Florida star Eamon O'Keef, in addition to Schaper. Schaper will be coming off an impressive performance in the 1000 yard event at the Mason Dixon Games in Louisville, Ky., last weekend. He finished third in a school record 2:08.5 as Mark Weinzenreid set a world indoor mark of 2:05.1 at the distance. Schaper, an Atlanta native who showed outstanding potential in running 4:07.4 for the mile and a 1:52.5 half mile last year as a freshman, is scheduled to run at 8:45 tonight. At Abilene Christian, where McClure coached the past eight years, his teams won seven Southland Conference titles in both track and cross-country. "There is not much difference in the track programs of Carolina and Abilene Christian," McClure said. "The kids here have as much potential as the team at Abilene Christian. The main difference between the two .is that the team here is made up of mostly' sophomores, and therefore are not as experienced as the team out there, who have a lot of seniors on the team." "I am really impressed with the attitude of the team," McClure continued. "I think one of the reasons for the great attitude here, in ad dition to the great coaches they have had, is the atmosphere here at Carolina." Last year the Gamecocks went through their dual season undefeated and. finished a close second to Maryland in the ACC Championships. Even though he is impressed with his team's ability McClure has not set any goals for his squad. "I have not made any goals yet for the team. They have to get to know me and I have to get to know them." In comparing the recruiting procedures for Carolina and his former team, McClure said, "There is no difference except that at Abilene Christian they recruit from all over the country and here at Carolina we recruit mostly from along the Eastern seaboard. OPEN 11 A.M. - tch McClure h athletes "We will recruit good athletes wherever they are," McClure remarked, "but the guy has to want to come to the school before he will do a good job." As a long range goal McClure said he hopes the track program at USC can improve "along the same lines as the rest of the athletic programs here. My philosophy is to let a boy go as far as his potential can take him. We want to be competitive with anybody we meet." Although McClure said it was too early to notice the strengths and weaknesses within the track program itself, he said, "As far as the team goes we are weak in the jumps, the high jump and long-jump. But this is sort of a universal problem. The great jumpers usually make fine basketball players and many of them are playing basketball. This can be either good or bad, depending which side of the fence you are on." An assistant coach for this year's U.S. Olympic team, McClure believes that USC has some track performers who have the potential to be among the top men in the nation in their events. He is especially high on Jim Schaper, who last week finished third in the 1000 yard run at the Mason-Dixon Games. In the same race Wisconsin's Mark Weinzenreid established an indoor world record with a 2:05.1 clocking.
