Beauford said a column in the Feb. 7, GAMECOCK wrongly reported that the Horseshoe was without proper fire protection. He said the fire protection system of the Horseshoe had been tested in January and that it is working order. Beauford said the alarm had never been pulled as the column had claimed. If the alarm had been pulled, it would have sounded at the Columbia Fire Department and not at the Horseshoe, he said. The federal Occupational Health and Safety Act does not require an alarm system which will sound in the dormitory if a sprinkler system exists. A month ago the University approved funds to in stall an alarm system which will sound in the Horseshoe. Beauford warns that no student should tamper with any fire equipment because it will result in a $100 fine, 30 days in jail or both. GAMECOCK columnist, Scott Derks, who wrote the article said, "I was concerned about the problem of fire on the Horseshoe when I wrote the column. Everything I said in the column is true and every act, including pulling of the fire alarm, took place. I'm sorry that Mr. Beauford finds it necessary to brand me a liar, but I think we're both after the same objective--protection of the men on the Shoe."
