A resolution opposing the subpoenaing of four
GAMECOCK staff members was passed
unanimously by the South Carolina Press
Association (SCPA) in their annual meeting
Saturday.
The resolution said "the maintenance of the
confidentiality of sources is essential to the
effectiveness of a newspaper's inquiries."
GAMECOCK Editor Glenda Miller, Associate
Editor John Gash, and staff writers Rusty
Robinson and Charles Fellenbaum have been
subpoenaed to appear today before the
Richland County Grand Jury to answer
questions concerning a series of articles on
campus drug sales.

were operating in the dark because we do not

"The resolution expresses the concern of the
professional press in actions by grand juries
that make available to the government the
investigative work of reporters," Workman
said.
USC journalism professor and SCPA
secretary manager, Dr. Reid Montgomery,
said, "What this resolution means is that the
papers in South Carolina have gone on record in
support of a newspapers' right not to even
appear before a grand jury."
