"But I realized my life was
empty. I gave up this life and
entered a period of spiritual
growing, of serving and
seeking;" she said.
"I lived this quiet life for 15
years and then began my
pilgrimage," she said. "My
friends thought I has lost my
senses- I was not athletic and
had never done much walking.
"But since that time I have
obtained the blessing of good
health, ' she said.
Peace Pilgrim, who began
her pilgrimage from Los
Angeles, dresses in blue slacks
and shirt with a tunic that
bears her name on the front
and "25,000 miles on foot for
world peace" on the back.
"I literally have no home; I
wear or carry everything I
own," she said. Peace Pilgrim
said that though she has no
blood relatives, she is uniquely
free. "I'm part of a large
family; all human beings are
my brothers and sisters."
Peace Pilgrim said that
three-fourths of the time she is
given a place to sleep by
strangers and seldom skips
more than three meals at a
time.
Upcominj
efforts of
A group of Californians' efforts
to live in harmony with their en
vironment which caused a pitched
battle with local authorities is
dramatically described in a new
book, "Canyon' by John van der
Zee, to be published Feb. 23 by
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.
Canyon is a rustic community
just a few miles east of San
Francisco. Several years ago a
group of people, eager to escape
teh restraints of urban society,
moved to Canyon to enjoy the
freedom of open space, breathe
fresh air and live among the
redwoods close to nature. They
wanted to teach their children
their own values away from
manicured lawns and two-car
garages.
They built geodetic dome houses,
tree houses, and glass houses of
unconventional materials like
railroad ties, scrap lumber,
eucalyptus trees complete with
foilage, and old window panes.
Whatever material they used had
to be cheap. Banks refused
mortgages in Canyon; so money
was scarce even though most of the
people had jobs outside the com
munity.
Some of the people who had been
living in Canyon for decades ob
jected to the newcomers' long hair,
rock music, casual way of living,
and unconventional clothes. Three
of them, carrying a petition signed
by several others, appeared before
the Contra Costa County Board of
Supervisors and demanded that
the building codes be strictly en
forced to expell the newcomers
from Canyon.
In February, 1969, there was a
showdown when country officials
came to Canyon to post eviction
notices on the new houses, They

"I don't even think about
eating until it's offered." She
said that in 1954 she lived for 45
days "praying and fasting."
Peace Pilgrim said she is
booked for speaking
engagements until 1977.
She said she has been "tested
in many ways. I once faced
death in a snow storm but I
found an old packing box under
a bridge and was able to sleep
there through the night.
"Once you have passed the
test you can always look back
on these experiences as good,"
she said.
Peace Pilgrim said that for
years her message was "Let
the killing. in Vietnam cease."
Vietnam is a sympton of our
terrible immaturity."
"If we were mature, there
would be no more Vietnams,"
she said.
"We watch are physical
growing but forget about the
more important spiritual
growth," she said. "Spiritual
growth begins when you are
completely willing to leave the
self-centered life and ends
when you become God
centered and part of the
whole."

Europe
Taking their hotels along
with them, busloads of young
people will explore Europe
next summer and sleep in the
specially designed mobile hotel
that accompanies them.
Pan Am's Hotelbus tours are
designed around a new vehicle
with beds, kitchen, showers
and toilets mounted on a truck
that drives right along with the
bus.
Compartments for six, nine
or a dozen people contain
three-tier bunk beds, foam
rubber mattresses, all the
necessary bedding, private
locker space and closet,
reading lamps, and an ad
justable window for each bunk.
The Hotelbus usually
overnights at campsites,
giving the travelers the op
portunity to meet European
families who are camping their
way through the countryside.

The struggle between the
