Where's the ad?
DEAR MS. MILLER:
About two and a half months ago
I gave a lost and found ad to the
Gamecock office and I haven't seen
the ad printed yet. You said your
policy was to print any letter you
received, so maybe you will print
this one. I lost a Bic ink pen
somewhere between Capstone and
the Coliseum, but by now it could
be anywhere. The person who
found it probably does not even
know it is mine.
If you do not print this, I will
know you are a bunch of com
munist hippies who don't do
anything but smoke marijuana and
tear down the country. When me
and Billy and Calvin and Marty
and the rest of the boys get a hold
of you, you're gonna be sorry. You
better not hang around Doug
Broome's.

Some whites
afraid of truth
DEAR MS. MILLER:
Now that the truth has come to
light, it seems that some Whites
have become scared because two
Black students had the courage to
speak the truth about the almighty
Carolina Gamecocks.
Referring to the letter by Master
Skip Earle, and his orders for
Marjorie Miller and Michael Powe
to leave his beloved Carolina
campus, only because they had the
courage to bring to light the fact
that in three seasons of basketball,
Casey Manning has still managed
to sit out most of the season on the
bench.
When Master Earle referred to
Coach McGuire's specific reason
for recruiting Casey Manning it
surely could not have been because
of this man's basketball talents
because he doesn't play but ten
minutes out of the whole season at
the most. Could this specific
reason be that the only reason that
Coach McGuire recruited Casey
Manning was to say that he has a
Black player on his team?
It is true that the Gamecocks
have started to recruit Black
athletes in the past two or three

years, but out of all the other
outstanding Black athletes in
South Carolina and the rest of the
South, not counting the nation who
have gone on to gain reputations
for their respective schools, that
Master Earle speaks so proudly of,
and have helped their schools go on
to national titles and be top con
tenders in colliegate basketball, it
is a shame that they have been
discriminated against and have
been unnoticed by the University
of South Carolina for all these
years.
It is a shame that you, Master
Earle, the self-appointed Crusader
who decides who is fit enough to be
a part of the Carolina campus, had
to use the incident at the
University of Minnesota to support
your argument. But while you
brought it up you failed to give the
facts that started the incident at
the University of Minnesota to to
give the facts that started the
incident. A White player decided
to spit on a brother because the
going got rough, so after the game
two brothers just did him a job.
Now instead of him playing for his
team, he will be watching from a
hospital bed. Now Master Earle
since you brought it up, can you tell
me how this incident is relevant to
the situation here at Carolina?
It is your kind Master Earle that
will try to convince Black people
that you as Whites are trying to fit
Blacks in your backwards society,
and if they are not satisfied with
what the White man is doing they
can either love it, shut-up, or leave.
Well Master Earle those days are
long gone, for as long as Black
Students are forced into supporting
the athletic program, we demand
that we be properly represented or
else it is time for a change. Surely
you pointed out the fact that there
are black athletes in the athletic
program, for which all blacks are
proud, and you even went so far as
to refer to brother Bethea as
Bubba Smith, but can this list of
eleven black players in the whole
athletic program compare with the
number of white players?
It is not Ms. Millers' and Mr.
Powes' kind that start trouble at a
University, but it is their so-called
kind that will make a better place
in this world for all black people.
The truth is, that it is your kind like
Thurmond, Wallace, and Nixon
with your backwards thinking that
don't fit in this society. And the

CARL MILLER
Bias against
pipsqueaks
DEAR MS. MILLER:
I am a student at USC who
recently witnessed several of the
basketball games and was highly
disappointed because the team
won the games.
Why? Because I as a short
student feel that I have not been
fully represented on the team here
at Carolina. Yes, it is nice of
Frank McGuire to have Jimmy
Powell, a short player, on the
team, because he really adds depth
to the team. He has even played in
a few games this year...
I wonder if McGuire is still using
the excuse that Powell is still not
e&ting his Wheaties, or is it that
McGuire still believes. that
"shorts" are pip-squeaks.. The
"shorts" of USC were forced, just
like everyone else, to pay the
expenses for a team that we do not
wish to support, to finance, or even
comprehend the existence of...
I do not want to see or support an
all-tall team. Yet, still I am
compelled to support a team which
I cannot be proud of...
Until the athletic department
recruits more "shorts,' on the
really make them working
mechanisms, on the team, and
gives them an equal chance to
start, we short students will
always be dissatisfied.
I believe that any reasonably
intelligent person can recognize
the foolishness of the preceding
argument. Yet, a very similar
letter by Marjorie Miller and
Michael Powe appeared in the
February 7, 1972 issue of The
Gamecock, not protesting the
absence of "shorts" on athletic
teams, but the absence of blacks.
People cannot begin to work
together to remedy the real racial
problems of society until they
learn to distinguish the vital from
the trivial and the valid from the
invalid.
When will some people quit
trying to turn every phase of life
into a raging racial dispute?
Claims of racial prejudice in many
areas are justified, but basketball,
or any sport, has nothing to do with
skin color. Sports are contests of
physical dexterity, not of
pigmentation.
I'm sure that Frank McGuire,
who is one of the finest basketball
coaches in the country, is smart
enough to know which players are
capable of giving the best per
formance; I'm sure he knows his
job well enough not to allow petty
racial issues to intefere with a
game as fine as basketball.
Ms. Miller and Mr. Powe's feeble
attempt to incite unfounded and
unfair discontent with Coach
McGuire and his staff only proves
that claims of racial prejudice are
just not valid on the courts of the
Carolina Gamecocks.
DIANE SEVERIN
The irrelevancy
of the obscure
DEAR MS. MILLER:
Within the last week the
President of the Clariosphic
Literary Society wrote the
GAMECOCK to contradict my
statement that the Clariosophic
and Euphradian Societies share
the distinction of being the two
oldest campus organizations. It is
his contention that the
Clariosophic Society is "two weeks
older" than the Euphradian
Society. Therefore, he maintains,
the Clariosophics alone should
bear the distinction of having the
longest existence.
Were the claim valid, I would be
happy to acknowledge it in behalf
of the Euphradians. However, the
best historical evidence which we
can produce indicated that both
groups have a common origin and
were created at the same time.
In 1806, as enrollment increased
at this college, the Philomathic
Society, the predecessor of today's
literary societies, grew too large to
be workable. Consequently, the
Philomathic Society convened the
"Synapian Convention," which
drew the plan of separation. It was
decided that two students should
be selected as "Captains" to make
an equal division of both the
members and funds of the old
society. The Constitution of the
Philomathic Society provided the
model for the constitutions of the
new organizations. The outcome
was the Clariosophic and
Euphradian Societies. I cite page
231 of Vol. 1 of Dr. Hollis'
HISTORY Of The UNIVERSITY
SOUTH CAROLINA, University of
South Carolina Press. 1951, as my
source. One of Dr. Hollis' primary
sources is the minutes of the
"Synapian Convention," which is
owned by the Clariosophic Society.
The two students who made the
division of the Philomathics were
James and Joseph Lowry,
brothers, who were admitted to the
College in January, 1805. Before
an assembly of the student body,
the brothers "threw up heads and
tails for the first choice." Thus the
selection was made, the division
finalized, and the Clariosophics
and the Euphradians created. This
information is found in the Ap
pendix to Maximillian LaBorde's
HISTORY Of The SOUTH
CAROLINA COLLEGE,
(Charleston: Walker, Evans, &
Cogswell, 1874).
Mercifully, no record is
available which indicates who won
the first toss of the coin. Nor is
there a record of which group met
first as a separate organization.
Both held their first meetings on
February 6, 1806. pp. 19, 33, J. Rion
McKissick. The CLARIOSOPHIC
EUPHRADIAN SOCIETIES 1801
1931(Columbia: Epworth Or
phanage Press, n.d.) I know of
nothing extant which tells the
exact time of day of these first
gatherings.
My point is that arguing over
which society is the older is like
yelling "My dog is better than your
dog." Nothing is gained, though
much time is wasted -time better
spent building the organizations'
programs rather than destroying
ourselves through fruitless in
dulgence in antiquarianism. If any
who participate in these societies
today feel that the question of
which organization met at the
earliest hour on February 6. 1806
has the slightest relevance to the
present day function of the literary
society he should carefully
examine his reasons for having
joined.
While we should have a
reverence for the past, we should
not bury ourselves arguing trivial
points. There are issues enough to
debate on the campus and in the
State without resorting to the
obscure. The Euphradian Society
invites any interested students to
join us in what, hopefully, is not a
lost adventure in education, free
inquiry and debate of current
issues in the never-ending search
for truth, to which all universities
are dedicated.
