Bill to deprive
grad students
EDITOR:
This letter has two objectives.
One to inform the Senators who
support Senator Sloan's bill to
deprive the grad student of their
privilege in obtaining tickets of
some facts. I have written Senator
Sloan about this matter in more
detail. The average grad student
will raise half as many hours as
does the undergraduate. A MA
candidate, I have 60 hours and four
years at USC I feel that I deserve
as much consideration as does a
senior in the matter of obtaining
tickets. I suggest to Senator Sloan
that perhaps a seperate scale be
worked out for grads since most
grads take only 9 hours a semester
rather than 15. I hope the senate
will respect the rights of the grad
student in this matter and not
deprive the 4 year man of his ticket
rights.
Also now that USC has lowered
its standards in order that our
'leaderless' football team can get
more recruits. I wonder if it is
possible to publish the statistics on
how well these "unqualified
students" did this past semester. If
most failed to make the grade we
should either raise the standards

Leaders should
stop rhetoric
EDITOR:
While Sen. Hubert Humphrey
was in Raleigh last week he said
President Nixon's veto of the Child
Development Act was "an in
credible, cruel and heartless blow
to hundreds of thousands of
children and their families."
No doubt the act was not without
merit or Congress wouldn't have
passed it. Hopefully President
Nixon thought it was better for the
people not to have the act or he
wouldn't have vetoed it. I don't
presume to know whether the veto
was better for the country or not,
but I don't think Sen. Humphrey
should find the veto incredible if he
read or listened to the several page
message President Nixon sent to
Congress along with the vetoed
act.
Instead of saying the "veto was a
shameful act," Sen. Humphrey
could have benefited the people of
Raleigh and himself by conceding
that the President did what he
thought was right. Then Sen.
Humphrey could have proceded to
question the validity of the reasons

Our leaders, Democrats and
Republicans alike, would do us,
and maybe themselves, more good
if they would make a greater effort
to refrain from strong rhetoric and
replace it with a calm and logical
examination of issues and ideals.

EDITOR:
I have been reading about the
SCPIRG - YAF debate and I have
decided to jump on the bandwagon
by forming GDFOESA (guh do' fo
suh) which is the Group Dedicated
(to) Formation of Easily Sayable
Acronyms. The purpose of the
GDFOEJA organization is to
produce more easily sayable
acronyms. (An acronym is a word
formed from initials or parts of
words). GDFOESA is itself quite
unsayable and thereby attracts
attention to itself.
There are four classes of
acronyms:
1. sayable ones (CORE, LASER)
2. disgustingly sayable ones
(YAF leads to thoughts of
seasickness)
3. borderline sayable ones
(SCPIRG)
4. spellable ones (UAW, NAACP,
AFL-CIO)
Anyone who has studied
:sociology or related fields knows
that any movement must have
some symbol or name that is easily
drawn or said. The peace sign and
the swastika are two good
examples of easily identifiable,
easily drawn signs. I find that most
causes (except group 1) lack
proper names. GDFOESA will
therefore give good names to
organizations. For example
wouldn't YAF (based on its stand)
be better off as Dedicated In
dividuals Not Going Along (with)
Lunatic Imbecility Nor Greed
(DING A LING)? And wouldn't
SCPIRG be better off as Realists
Intent (on) Protecting Others
From Fakes (RIP OFF)?
I will of course need money for
this project and I ask that 25c be
added on to student fees. I will
hand it back to anyone who comes
to my room in the honeycombs. I
know this to be rather bad for
many on-campus students but it is
just as easy as going to the Russell
House for off-campus students and
I see no reason to play favorites. I
really doubt that many will want
their money back for I realize the
great majority of people would not
show at Russell House to reclaim
$3.00 and I doubt many would walk
all the way to the honeycombs (I
may move to Bates House though).

acronyms, write them on a very
polite, mimeographed form letter,
and send them to where they will
do the most good. They will of
course be adopted by various
organizations for it would be in
sane to let a good acronym slip by.

So your pushing female lib down

to determine the existance or lack
of a husband may be important in
some instances of identification.
Where do you come off ar
bitrarily calling every female who
happens to be "worthy" of space in
the Gamecock "Ms."? Why don't
you ask first? Or, if this is not
possible, avoid titles all together?
I suspect next year gay lib will
be the "hip" crusade. Will you try
to brainwash us into addressing
ever closet queen as "Your
Highness"?

McKuen just
doesn't rate

Ordinarily, I would give you
"thumbs down" regarding your
Yevtushenko rip off -- but I won't.
After some grooving over the
Russian's great performance, the
mere thought of Rod McKuen - the
toad of American letters - trying
to do the same gig in the U.S.S.R.
was a joke of real vengence. It is
sobering, however, to consider that
were McKuen to visit USC he
would probably pack in another
5,000 listeners over the good-sized
crowd who came to see Mr.
Yevtushenko. That, of course,
would not be justice. The only
consolation is that McKuen's
'sneakers and pussycats' would
pale disappear before Yev
tushenko's "whisky, vodka, and
the Maytime Elbe." When McKuen
can produce a piece as powerful as
"Babi Yar" then please be so kind
as to print Yevtushenko's photo
above his name!

sincerity and depth of feeling. My
only question is why you didn't
complement it with yellow
stockings and crossed garters.
I'm certain your pedantic
concern for appropriate detail
would flatter any artist, as well as
ensure his speedy return. Indeed,
articles such as this will soon make
our campus a Mecca for all artists
of the caliber of that one pictured.
You are a credit to our city,
university, and diplomatic corps.

Motivation
gets tickets
EDITOR:
Since athletics is such an im
portant thing at Carolina, I feel
that I need to be heard. Athletic
Committee Chairman Clint Sloan
is surely sincere in his efforts to
change student ticket distribution,
but I am one student who firmly
disagrees. As a transfer student,
by Fall '72 I will be receiving
tickets in the sophomore section,
while my hours will equal those of
a senior.
My point is that devotion to
Carolina is not based upon how
long one has been here, but rather
how much personal motivation one
has put forth trying to arrive here.
If freshmen try hard they will one
day be allowed to purchase athletic
tickets that are as good as a senior.
The class standing method of
ticket distribution should not be
changed. Most graduate, law, and
all transfer students will be
penalized because they did not
have the insight to begin as a
freshman at Carolina so they could
get 50-yard-line football tickets.

'Horrible acts'
at Clemson
EDITOR:
Last week I went to Clemson
University to attend a concert and
have a fun evening. Instead, I saw
some horrible acts by the
audience. They weren't acts of
blood, gore or violence; they were
of immaturity.
During the intermissions, one of
the managers of the coliseum
came out and announced things
like people meeting people at
certain gates, cars that needed
moving, and people who had home
emergencies. The crowd would
scream obscenities and such at
him and throw things on stage. It
really aggravated me. First of all,
he was just doing his job, and
second of all, if a friend was
looking for me or I had a home
emergency, I would want to know
about it.
At one time during the show, one
guy dove headfirst over the
balcony railing to get on the floor
without a ticket. The cops ushered
him away, and the crowd went wild
like they did with the manager. It
was a dumb-minded stunt on the
guy's part; if he did not get
arrested, he probably broke
something, like his neck.
This is just an opinion of mine; it
is not to change any minds. I'm
sure it won't. I just think people
should have a little respect for
people with authority. Those of you
who disagree with me, that is your
opinion. Those of you who agree
should attend some of these con
certs. Maybe the crowd will be
quieter,,*more mature, and more
respectful to the management.
