Hawk( shoots BY GARY WEST Sports Writer CHICAGO- South Carolina's Gamecocks, who put together two comebacks earlier in the week, were not so fortunate Saturday as also-ran Iowa, behind the phenomenal shooting of Rick Williams, upset the fifth-ranked Gamecocks , 91-85. Williams who scored 40 points and dominated the game from start to finish as he hit. on 15 of 19 shots from the floor and 10 of 12 foul shots surpassing his previous high of 28 points against Nebraska. Carolina fell behind early, 7-1 in the first three minutes of the game as never got any closer than 56-55 after a Casey Manning layup off a steal. It was USC's third defeat in thirteen outings. The Hawkeyes opened in a 2-1-2 zone defense keeping Tom Riker and Danny Traylor off the boards and forcing the Gamecocks to take the outside shot thus permitting Iowa's 7-footer Kevin Kunnert to grab off 14 rebounds compared to the 12 rebounds of Riker and Traylor combined. With Williams and Kunnert dominating play, Iowa held on to 42-39 halftime lead which they opened to nine 49-40 at the offset of the second half. The Gamecocks made several attempts at catching the Hawkeyes behind Kevin Joyce, who connected on 11 of 19 shots from the field and pulled down 9 ken ye Parker ts Writer >ot basketball players are nc p duties. But Coach Frank McGuire summed up Carolina's comeback efforts best in saying, "we had two comebacks this week, but we couldn't do it a third time, maybe we played too much basketball for one week." Brian Winters, who started the second half in place of Bobby Carver, scored 15 points and led a Gamecock surge that saw Iowa's lead narrowed to 50-48, five minutes into the second half. Carolina also closed the gap to 70-67 and 78-76, late in the game but some timely foul shooting by the Hawkeyes (34-41 free throws) iced their seventh victory against five losses and their first victory away from home this season. Carolina was assessed with 27 personal fouls compared to Iowa's 16. Iowa converted 11 of 14 in the final four minutes to squelch any thoughts of a Carolina ~ victory. "I've said all season that when you go to different regions of the country to play, you're going to see different officiating and you just have to get used to it. This is the Big Ten and they play it tough inside," said McGuire. McGuire had much praise for Iowa's performance, especially Williams. "Iowa played a great game and deserved to win. Williams' shooting was terrific. We just never did stop him. "We seemed a bit snakebi today. We didn't do anything righL.. But Iowa beat us because they thof better team today. If we play like 4 this next week (against Northern Illinois) we'll be in bad shape." Carolina returns to an area familiar to many of its players Thursday night, Madison Square Garden, in New York in- a game against Fordham before returning to Chicago Stadium again next Saturday. McGuire, despite the loss, turned to the Gamecocks' overall goal of 20 victories. "That's still the magic number and it will be tough to get. But we'll keep our chins up, we won't let this get us down." Stovall to join staff Carolina athleti, director Paul Dietzel announced Friday that Jerry Stovall has beei added to the Gamecocks' footbail coaching staff. Stovall, a former all-p-o safety with the St. Louis Cardinals, joins the Gamecock staff as a defensive backfield coach. The former pro played for Dietzel at Louisiana State from 1960 to 193.
