English classes held in the
Towers complex last semester will
be continued throu the spring,
according to Chip Sanders,
assistant dean for residence life.
"We rate last fall's experiment a
success," Sanders said. "The
professors conducted a survey at
the end of the semester and got
back a unanimously favorable
response from the students in
volved."
The three English 101 classes
were set up in seminar style and
composed mostly of residents of
Baker and Burney dorms.
Professors' offices were located in
the bottom floor of Baker.
In the fall, members of these
experimental classes were
preselected. Roommates made up
one class and people from the
same floor composed another.
This arrangement, however,
broke down as students dropped
and added courses.

This semester, membership in
the classes was not limited to
Towers residents, but students
living in the area particularly were
encouraged to enroll.
"What we are trying to do is
bring academic work closer to
student life in general," Sanders
said.
"This is another way to meet
people in the students' residence
area and do so in an academic
setting, which should bring home
what college is all about."
If these courses are successful,
Sanders said, more classes may be
held in residence halls.
"We're trying to be flexible,"
Sanders said, "and 'give the
siudents what the students want."
