SCPIRG pollutes
fees system
EDITOR:
Many of you have probably
asked yourselves: "Why is Young
Americans for Freedom so
strongly opposed to SCPIRG?"
First and foremost, we oppose
SCPIRG because it is an in
fringement upon student liberty.
SCPIRG would haul in tens of
thousands of dollars through
forced taxation. The SCPIRG tax
is not voluntary, it is mandatory
and is morally wrong. If SCPIRG
is, as it claims, voluntary, why not
allow students wishing to join to do
WHa
We kept
so -- but on a dues paying basis?
Let them finance their own
operation instead of forcing those
of us wanting no part of SCPIRG to
finance this vested interest group?
Because SCPIRG could not survive
through voluntary funding? In
stead, it prefers to crucify students
upon a cross of forced taxation.
State money (the money of many
not wanting to support SCPIRG)
would be used to finance this
vested interest group. Wasn't it
Madame Roland who said: "Ah,
liberty, what crimes are com
mitted in thy name."
Secondly, we oppose SCPIRG on
its own merits. SCPIRG has yet to
state when, where, how, and in
what amount refunds will be given.

Letters
"Quickly, conveniently, easily,
and (perhaps) fully" are hardly
answers. Then there are other
questions which cannot be
discussed in the scope of this letter,
such as local autonomy, con
stitutional structure, law students'
domination, political involvement,
and bureaucratic control.
We will continue our fight
against SCPIRG's attempt to
further pollute USC's student
activity fees system.

We may not have the money, the
Nader organization, the slick
public relations, of SCPIRG, but
we do have an ideal: the ideal of
the free man in a free society. We
will implement that ideal on the
campus of the University of South
Carolina.

Thought I'd
seen it before
EDITOR:
I took great interest in the
GAMECOCK's recent picture of a
scene in spring registration, where
"shorter lines and new packet
distribution method made spring
registration less hectic than last
fall."
Oddly enough, the same photo
was run in the September 8 issue,
with the caption, "This was just
one of the long lines in a crowded
room during registration." Is this
indicative of the GAMECOCK's
incisive news coverage to come?
As usual, the GAMECOCK sees
events the way it wants to see
them.

helped in the registration phase of
the SCPIRG petition drive, we
want to thank the entire USC
student body for their support of
SCPIRG - and for their patience
and courtesy in listening to the
SCPIRG proposal.
Those students whom we ap
proached to "sign for SCPIRG"
listened to what we had to say,
asked questions, and, in the
overwhelming majority of cases,
signed the SCPIRG petition. Those
who disagreed, or who wanted to
find out more about SCPIRG, were
also patient and courteous.
We thank the entire USC student
body for its reaction to SCPIRG
and hope, as the petition drive
continues, that we can present the
SCPIRG idea as courteously as it
was received.
