Villan( I Quake By JIM HERSH Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA- Tom Ingelsby capped an outstanding individual performance by sinking two crucial free throws with six seconds left in the game to propel Villanova past Carolina, 77-76, in the championship game of the Quaker City.Tournement here Dec. 30. In a game packed with tremendous plays, Ingelsby provided the spark which allowed the Wildcats to stop the Gamecock's win streak at seven games. The junior guard scored 28 points in the final game and was named the MVP of the tournement. Kevin Joyce, who was in strumental in keeping the Gamecocks close in the final stages of the game, almost pulled the win out for USC but his last second shot from the corner bounced around the rim and out. Early in the contest the Gamecocks held the upper hand, and several times appeared to be pulling away from the Wildcats. With only two minutes gone the Gamecocks jumped ahead 6-0. But Villanova rallied and three minutes later tied the score at six Then with Villanova up 20-17 Carolina reeled off 14 of the next 1. points and with 5:32 left in the hall led 31-21. Ingelsby and forwarc Chris Ford got the Wildcats back ir the game by hitting from outsid4 the USC zone defense, and wher Ford hit a shot from 15 feet at th4 buzzer, Villanova moved into a ti at 39 apiece. For the first ten minutes of thi second half the game was tight But then Ingelsby scored threi straight baskets and with eigh minutes left in the game Villanovi was up by nine, 64-55. Villanova took a gamble when Coach Jack Kraft ordered the Wildcats to foul in order to get the ball back. Joyce went to the foul line with 27 seconds left and made the tie breaking shot. The Wildcats allowed the time to roll down and with ten seconds left set up one final play. "The credit for this play goes to Coach McAte (a Villanova assistant)," Ingelsby said. "He put it in just before the tournement and we saved it for a situation like this. I go inside, then I set a fake pick for Hank (Siemiontkowski) and roll back to the goal. It's a great play." The play worked to perfection and Bobby Carver, who was guarding Ingelsby, had to foul him t with six seconds left. Ingelsby hit both free throws to give Villanova the lead at, 77-76. 1 After a time-out Joyce dribbled the full length of the court and tried a jump shot from deep in the corner. "What made it a great game," McGuire said, "was the way they came back and the way we came back." Carver, who covered Ingelsby, had nothing but praise for the tourney MVP. "He's just great. I've played against them all...John Roche, Austin Carr, Charlie Davis. Outside of Roche, he's as good as anybody." In the first round of the tour nement, Carolina upended Fair field, 87-69, behind Riker's 23 points. Joyce chipped in 21 while Danny Traylor had 18. Boston College fell before the Gamecocks, 86-64. in the semi-finals. Gamecocl in thrillin By TEDDY HEFFNER Sports Editor Carolina started off the Christmas break with a thriller as oft -beaten Virginia Tech, a team USC has had trouble with in the past, played the then third-ranked Gamecocks to a standoff and had a chance to win with 11 seconds left to play. USC was clinging to a one-point, 77-76, lead when Tom Riker's pass intended for Bob Carver in the backcourt went out of bounds. Tech brought the ball in and set up for the final shot. Un fortunately, from a Gobbler point of view, ace shooter Allan Bristow had fouled out earlier in the game. Six-six Charlie Lipscomb was forced to lake the shot and although he was wide open his 12 footer hit the rim and bounced away. Danny Traylor got the rebound for USC and was immediately fouled, set ting the stage for an interesting finish. Coach Frank McGuire told his players to let Traylor shoot and stay away to be sure not to foul. Traylor's shot rimmed the basket and VPI got the rebound. Traylor stuck his hands up in front of the Tech player and blocked a desperation shot away. However, the move gave Carolina fans some anxious moments as Tech contested the slight contact as a foul. "It's a good thing we weren't on the road," McGuire said. Traylor didn't let the experience bother him. "It was reflex," he said. "I just stuck my hands up, he ran into me. Most of the Gamecocks had high praise for Virginia Tech's Bristow, who bombed the nets for 31 points. Also, T1om Trice seemed to play over his head against the taller -Gd1motocks.2..
