Carolina will carry a 3-0 record into the encounter, with wins over Auburn, Santa Clara and California. VPI has defeated Rich mond in their opener, while taking a 93-60 drubbing from national power North Carolina. The Gobblers are led by All America candidate Allan Bristow, who, according to head coach Don DeVoe is "the hardest working forward I have ever worded with." The 6-7, 205 pound junior was VPI's second leading scorer with a 20.4 and top rebounder at 13.1. "He's extremely aggressive and if there's ever a loose ball you can almost be sure he is the man who will wind up with it," DeVoe said. "He shoots very well, but we feel his shooting range should be ex panded. He's a very dedicated player, rebounds very well and is extremely good at handling the ball on a fast break." Senior Charlie Lipscomb rates as Virginia Tech's other offensive threat. DeVoe also has a fine crop of sophomores with which to work, led by 6-512 forward Craig Leider. Leider averaged 24.5 points as a freshman and almost 15 rebounds in each of VPI's 15 fresh contests. One of the veterans returning from last year's squad is Wanda Briely, a 5-6 sophomore who averaged 10 points a game and is tabbed a "total ball player" by Coach Meade and is expected to run the offense. Ricky Allen a junior guard is anot her veteran returnee from last season who averaged four points per game and is considered a defensive stalwart. "Ricky is one of the best defensive players I've seen, she is extremely quick and is good on the press," said Coach Meade. At the wings, Coach Meade has 5 11 Nancy Fitzgeral, a junior who had a 12 point average and pulled down 14 rebounds a game last season, and Peggy Harden a 5-8 sophomore who averaged five points and eight rebounds a game last year. Ms. Harden also paced the team at the charity stripe with a 73 per cent mark. Returning to the low post position is Linda Howie a 5-10 sophomore who averaged five pois a game and grabbed ten rebounds per contest last season. "Linda is a very aggressive player and is good along the baseline," said Coach Meade. The biggest loss to this year's squad is the absence of 6-0 Mary Tope who played on the Pan American team two years ago. Of the twenty girls up for open positions, 13 are freshmen, one sophomore four juniors and two seniors. Coach Meade said that she is very pleased with prospects in that most of them have much basketball experience and she hopes to have the team picked by CThristmas break..
