The Division of Student Affairs
announced today that David
Kenneth Ness has been appointed
director of the Student Union.
Ness is presently serving as the
program director of the Georgia
Tech Student Center. He is a '63
graduate of St. Olaf College and
holds a B. A. in psychtlogy. He has
completed the course work for a M.
S. degree in student Personnel and
Guidance and expects to receive
the degree in June 1972.

(MEC) for college journalists is
Feb. 10, announced Sigma Delta
Chi, professional journalistic
society.
The contest recognizes out
standing student writers,
newscasters, editors and
photographers. No fees are
required and the contest features
open competition, not restricted to
SDX members and not restricted
to publication on campus.
Eligible to compete are persons
working on an academic degree
who were enrolled as full-time
college or university students for a
minimum of 20 weeks during the
contiest period, Feb. 1, 1971, t o Feb.
1, 1972.

national headquarters to compete

recognized at,the 'SDX -national
convention Nov. 1.4-18 in Dallas.

operations of the Union and

who has served as acting director
since August.

Union plans
camp outs
The Recreation Committee of the University Union is
planning a full slate of camping activities for January.
On Jan. 21-23, the second weekend of the new semester,
Bell Camp will be the scene of a University camp-out. The
group will leave Friday at 5:00. Free food and tran
sportation will be provided, and campers have their choice
of lodging in a free cabin or tent.
Hunting Island State Park will be the destination of the
next trip Jan. 28-30. There will be a $3.50 charge for each
person which includes food, transportation and tents. This
trip will be limited to 40 persons.
Other activities at Bell Camp include an open Chess
Festival Jan. 16. Transportation and a free meal will be
provided. The entry fee for players will be $2.00.
A program is also being set up whereby students can
check out tents, lanterns and camp stoves for a small
deposit for private camping trips.
Dan Bell, Recreation Committee co-chairman, said, "So
far camping activities here have been very limited. Next
semester we plan to expand our program to include
Outward Bound, survival camping, canoe trips and Ap
palachian trail hikes."
"If anyone is interested in participating in these trips or
has any good ideas for projects, the committee meets
every Tuesday in Russell House room 321. We have $4,000
to spend on equipment and we need people to help us spend
it," Bell said.
