swimmers were named NCAA
College Division All Americas,
while one, Joe Lewkowicz, holds
the Division 200 yard butterfly
mark.
"They (South Florida) did just
about what we expected them to,
but we went out there, swam our
best and beat them," said an ec
static but unsurprised John Cahill,
an assistant coach for USC. But
Cahill says that Carolina will have
to improve if they are to repeat
their success against a "tough"
North Carolina team, December
11, in Chapel Hill.
Bob Warner, who turned in a new
sophomore and career record in
the 1000 yard freestyle, was voted
"Gamecock of the Meet" by his
teammates. Warner also narrowly
missed victory in the 500 yard
freestyle, in perhaps the most
exciting event of the night, as he
was touched out at the wall by
South Florida's Dean Hardy.
Freshman sensation Casey
Claflin won two events, the 200
individual medley and the 200 yard
backstroke, and smashed several
records in the process. Claflin
lowered the USC pool record for
the backstroke to 2:06.0 and his
career best time in the IM dropped
Io 2:04.9.
Gary Wetherhold, a former ACC
diving champion, won easily in the
1 meter dive but was scratched
from the three meter contest.
"Gary had injured his hand earlier
in the week and we felt that since
the meet was decided at that point
we would scratch him, not wanting

The Gamecocks jumped out its
early lead as Claflin, Jeff Neubert,
Jim Villa and Chip Newman swept
to a comparatively easy victory in
the 400 yard medley relay.
Other winners for Carolina
were: Newman in the 50 yard
freestyle with a time of 22.4 and
Roger Rice in the 100 yard
freestyle with a time of 49.9.

Carolina's freshman basket
ballers suffered their 'second
setback in as many games,
Wednesday night when a very
strong undefeated Fort Jackson
squad handed them an 86-79 defeat
in Lee Field House.
The Biddies remained in a close
struggle throughout the initial half,
trailing by only six points at the
close of the period. The second half
was to spell the eventual downfall
of the Biddies as Fort Jackson
stretched their slim halftime
margin into a 16-point bulge and
Carolina could manage to regain
only nine of those points.
Fort Jackson fielded a very
strong, experienced team in
cluding Charlie Powell, a former
professional player in the
American Basketball Association.
Unsurprisingly, Powell paced all

figures was Don Davidson with 23
points.

Conversely, four of the Biddies
recorded tallies in double figures.
Spearheading the Carolina scorers
was Clyde Agnew, the team's tall
pivotman, with 22 points.
Following Agnew closely was
Tommy Cox, who scored 21 points.
Cox had scored 33 points in the
frosh's first game and remains the
team's leading scorer.
