Intra Joyce, I dominat BY DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Editor Kevin Joyce and Danriy Traylor dominated play as the 1971-2 version of Carolina's Gamecocks went on public display. Monday night in the annual Block C In trasquad game. Joyce was the team's high scorer with 30 points, while Traylor added 27, in addition to grabbing 14 rebounds. Head coach Frank McGuire placed his top six players, Joyce, Traylor, Tom Riker, Rick Aydlett, Bobby Carver, Brian Winters and freshman Jimmy Walsh on one team in the firit half of play, op posing Ed Peterson, Rick Mousa, Billy Grimes, Jimmy Powell and freshmen Tom Cox, George Felton and Clyde Agnew. Then in the second half, McGuire reverted to two more balanced teams, as the 63-29 margin in favor of the starters in the first half was narrowed to 52-32 during second period play. "The second half was much a much better scrimmage," remarked McGuire. "I really thought the second half might go down to the wire. "This game does much good," the Gamecock mentor continued. "You get the freshmen playing under game. conditions, while the sophomores are getting varsity experience, while playing in front of people. Those three boys can really make the boards fly." McGuire then went into specifics concerning individual per formances throughout the game. "You just cannot overcome Joyce. He's the real difference. He's real tough and has quick hands. "And Danny Traylor is the most improved player out there as far as last year's team is concerned. One day Traylor will outscore Riker, then Riker will come out on top. It's good having them together. Traylor looked real good going into the basket. "Winters and Mousa are going to be a big help," he said. "For 15 minutes, Mousa looked great. Then he tired when we put him on Traylor." Mousa scored 18 points, while snagging nine stray shots. Winters canned seven points and grabbed the same number of rebounds. McGuire's comments then shifted to the play of the four fresh men. "I was generally impressed with their play. Walsh looked pretty good out there. He is one clever ballplayer. "Tonight we were running the ball. In order to be a success, we must get the rebound and run it. Tonight, we were doing it. "We didn't play the zone at all in this game," he concluded. "That's because we play the zone so well. Carolina initiates season in Auburn Carolina will open their 1970-71 basketball season 4when they travel to Auburn Wednesday night. The Gamecocks are hoping to match their 23-6 showing of a year ago wtille the Tigers are looking to improve their 11-15 record. Seven letterm(n are back for the Tigers but Coach ill Lynn is without Auburn's all-time scoring leader, John Mengelt. Without Mengelt's scoring power in the back court, the Tigers will rely on their frontcourt to guide the team this year. At center, 6-10 Al Leapheart is the Tiger starter. Last year Leapheart averaged 11.2 points and 8.3 rebounds. Backing Leapheart in the post is 7-0, 250 pound transfer Ernie Magri. Three forward lettermen return this year to give Auburn depth up front. Jim Retseck is the top returnee. He had averages of 14.8 points and 11.3 rebounds last year and scored 19 points against the Gamecocks when USC defeated the Tigers 86-69. Tim Ash , (6-5) and 6-7 Ralph Smith are fighting for the other forward spot. Ash is a good shooter but needs to improve his rebounding game while Smith's potential is not known as he sat out last season with a knee injury. Gamecock coach Frank McGuire will probably start 7-0 junior Danny Traylor at center against the Tigers. Traylor is a much improved player from last year when he played in reserve roles averaging 1.8 points and 2.1 rebounds. Tom Riker, the 6-10 Long Island native, will be at one forward with co-captain Rick Aydlett the other USC frontcourt starter. Riker is starting his third season as a Carolina regular and is a bonafide star. He averaged 14.0 points and 8.0 rebourds in his junior campaign. Aydlett, meanwhile, has been the top forward reserve for the Gamecocks the past two seasons. The sharpshooter hit on .526 per cent of his shots last year and he averaged 7.8 points. Sophomore Rick Mousa and junior Billy Grimes are the frontcourt reserves. Mousa was the top rebounder for the Biddies last year and is tough on the boards, especially for his 6-5 height. Grimes, also 6-5, was ineligible last year but is back, capable of playing both at forward or guard. The size of both Carolina's and Auburn's frontcourt is relatively equal. The Tigers may have a bit more ex perience, mainly because Traylor never saw much of action previously, but for raw talent the Gamecocks have the edge. Riker should give the Auburn front line fits, and with help from Aydlett's outside shooting and Traylor's help inside, the Gamecocks should be too tough for the Tigers around the basket. Auburn is tr ying to make up for the loss of Mengelt in the backcourt and it is n'y an easy job. Henry Harris , the Tiger captain, is the top WJard returning and he will try to improve on his 11.6 sccring average. Gary England saw some starting time last year and brings experience to the Tiger backcourt. Dan Kirkland, a 6-4 swing man, Is another Auburn guard. The top sophomore hopeful is 6-1 Mike Christian, who led the SEC freshmen in scoring last year with a 25.8 average. B i f Miss Violet Mead, coach of the women's varsity basketball team, has announced tryouts for the 1971-72 team. All interested undergraduate women are encouraged to come to the Physical Education center on Dec. 2 and 3 at 4:00 p.m. Miss Mead announced that the women's team has scheduled six games for the approaching season. If interested, please contact Miss Mead at 777-3892 or drop by her office, 1010, in the PE building. The 1971 Intramural football all-star game will be played Thursday night, Dec. 2, at 7:00 p.m., on field "C''. A highly talented independent team will face an equally agressive Fraternity squad.
