Students-community
to collect donations
for Carolina Cares

Students and members of the Columbia Community will
demonstrate Wednesday that Carolina Cares.
More than 800 USC students are expected to participate
in this year's drive seeking donations of money, food,
clothing and toys for Columbia's needy.
A meeting for all volunteers will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, in
the Russell House Theatre.
Students must attend the meeting to receive assign
ments for Wednesday.
Individuals will canvas major traffic intersections,
shopping centers and residential areas on Carolina Cares
Day. Each student will have official identification badges
and solicitation permits to collect.
Columbia Mayor John T. Campbell has proclaimed Dec.
1, Carolina Cares Day endorsing the three-year old
project.
Money collected will be donated to the Woodyard Fund,
the Metropolitan Education Foundation, Toys for Tots and
the Wilkinson Home for Girls.
Food will be distributed to the Columbia Urban League,
clothing to the Salvation Army and the Urban League and
toys will be turned over to the Toys for Tots program
sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
Burger King of Columbia also will help by again
providing free food to Carolina Cares workers.
Fort Jackson is making trucks available to aid in the
transportation of collected materials.
Volunteers will be divided into two basic groups, The core
group and the regular volunteers. The core will work all
day with its primary emphasis on the collection of money
at major Columbia intersections and shopping centers.
The regular volunteers will assemble at the Russell
House at either 1 or 6:30 p.m., depending on the worker's
,shift. Workers will collect food, toys and canned goods
from homes in 14 residential areas.
