Rare bc A selection of rare books relating to the history of physics is on display during November in the Sience Lbrary, Physical Science Center, and the Rare Books Room, McKissick Memorial Library, at the University of South Carolina. Developments in the fields of mechanics, astronomy, electricity, optics, heat and mathematical physics is covered in the books, most of them printed between 1600 and 1900. Among the works displayed are the first complete English trans lation of Isaac Newton's "Prin cipia," and Einstein's first paper on relativity. Some 40 books were selected for the display and a booklet describing them has been written by USC physics Prof. Richard Childers. ROCK PAINTINGS An authority on South African rock paintings, Alex R. Willcox, will present a series of lectures in Columbia Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 22-23). Willcox has spent most of his lifetime studying the rock art of South Africa, from the rock drawings of several thousands years ago to the modern works in the area.
